When looking at the developmental experiences of Latin American countries, it becomes apparent that a countries political structure has a major impact on the global participation or dependence of the state . The political leaning of the country influences the development progress taken, whether it is a socialist country striving for domestic independence or a country varying from left to right wing politics hoping to create multiple forms of development. Development is seen as progression in terms of the economy or industrialization. Ecuador represents an example of changing political leaders bringing varying ideologies and as Jeanne A.K Hey states is a 'pro-typical Latin American country' (Hey, 59). This is due to Ecuador experiencing the same booms and busts of the area, being a primary-product exporter, being heavily-indebted, and having limited industry (Hey, 59). In contrast to Ecuador's changing political leaders, Cuba experienced the only successful socialist revolution in 1959 with a constant leader. Fidel Castro Ruz became prime minister, later turning into the president, of Cuba during the revolution in 1959 and continued to be president until 2006. Other Latin American countries have tried to implement or flirted with a socialist government, but none succeeded in eliminating private ownership in most areas or experienced a restructuring of class relations like Cuba. Ecuador is a typical Latin American country, while Cuba has deviated from the norm by instituting a socialist regime that is trying to compete on a global scale with similar resources to other close Latin American countries.
