Cruising Before and After the Economic Meltdown
When one thinks of a luxury cruise one tend to think of fresh exotic food, entertainment that would make Las Vegas jealous, and staff that had everything one could dream of right at their fingertips. That was how luxury cruising was before the economy took a nose dive and with it went a cut back of wonderful happy staff, fresh food, and star quality entertainment. So much has happened with the economy and it is seen in all aspects of life; the one place we did not want to see this issue was on our family vacations.
In both January 2006 and January 2010, my husband and I boarded a beautiful luxury cruise liner with our two children. In 2006, the staff greeted us in their perfectly pressed white uniforms and badges reflecting the beautiful amber lights that illuminated the entryway. They were perfectly respectful and polite; answering any questions we had even before we could finish asking. Upon our return to the exact ship and exact destinations in 2010, the staff still had pressed uniforms and flashy badges, yet their attitude was quite different. They were quick to tell us βto go sit in the lobby area and stay out of our room.β Their faces constantly with a look of distain showed we were bothers instead of guest on their cruise liner. When we entered the main lobby in 2006, it was like a childlike memory of my first visit to the museum. There were paintings so tall that they reached from the bottom of the first floor wall all the way to the top of the sixth floor. The elevators were encased by glass that shimmered with light reflected off the immense crystal chandelier hanging high above us. After being frowned upon in 2010, the experience of entering the main lobby was different than our previous cruise.
