The Crucible Movie Vs. The Play (text)
Over the years many movies have been made based upon famous plays or books. Often times these movies are successful in portraying the play-writer 's images and thoughts for the play or book. Arthur Miller 's play, The Crucible and the movie version have many differences and similarities, all of which contribute to the individual effectiveness of each in conveying their central message. There are several additions and changes to the plot, characters, and mood of the play, which have been implemented into the movie.

To begin, some scenes in the movie were only talked about or made reference to in the play, but in the movie these scenes take place and the viewer actually sees the event happen. For example the scene where the children and Tituba are dancing in the forest is never seen in the play, instead we learn about it through dialogue. This scene was probably added in the movie for a dramatic effect. The director uses foreshadowing, to change the mood of the scene and perception of the audience. Along the same lines, there are many scenes included in the movie that are outdoors. However, these scenes were not the same in the play version of the crucible because in the play these scenes took place indoors. Another slight change in the movie from the play is that in the movie the Proctor 's have two kids, but in the play they have three. Another scene that is in the movie that is not in the play is the final scene where Proctor is executed. In the play they do not talk about Proctor 's hanging, the book ends with Elizabeth saying, "He has his goodness now..."(Miller 145). The changes made to The Crucible for the movie version enhance the plot and make it easier to follow.

Mood can determine upcoming events in the plot of plays. There were some scenes added or adapted in the movie as opposed to the play, which modified it. First, the large group of "stricken" girls, including Abigail, was much bigger in the movie than the group of girls in the play. Another

    The Crucible, the movie, was made in 1996. Although it follows the same story-line of the original book there are many differences. In the movie, the first scene is Tituba and the girls dancing in the forest whereas in the book we merely hear about it when young Betty is sick and being examined. In the movie Reverend Hale’s wife is mentioned and Abigail accuses her of being a witch. Abigail visits John Proctor in jail with a plan to help him escape in the movie. In the book, Abigail never visits Proctor and actually runs away. Also in the movie, Abigail is seen stealing money from Paris which is not mentioned in the book. Many court scenes included in the book were not shown in the film. Like the first scene of the movie, most sets are filmed outdoors however in the book events take place indoors. Betty’s condition appears to be much more severe in the movie. She tries to jump out the window and is much more violent than described in the book. Tituba was whipped into confession in the movie when she was just scared into it in the novel.     Many movie directors base their stories on a book, while changing the plot and scenes to fit the taste of the public. For example, in most plays, people look for drama, but not for action since everything is done live on stage. Much of the dialogue in the remains the same, but Arthur Miller does create a few differences between his play and the movie for it to appeal to more people. One of the differences is much more emphasis on the theme of romance in the movie rather than in the original play, which emphasized more on the motif of lies. To emphasize this theme, the movie has added some scenes between Abigail Williams and John Proctor. The first scene, which is added, is their meeting in the woods when he tells her that if his wife is convicted, he will kill her. The second scene is when Abigail is running away and she tells him that she could bribe the guard and the two would be run off somewhere. In the movie however, it is to the point with the lies, then the convictions and then the hangings. Some of the other scenes are interchanged with others to make it more meaningful, but the majority of the play can be recognized in the movie. While many of the crimes committed were pushed by the desire for power of some persons (mostly men: Adolf Hitler, Pol Pot, Josef Stalin and Idi Amin Dada are good examples), others were realized in the name of God, as the ones who planned them say (all the wars among different religions and, more recently, Osama Bin Laden).
