CheckPoint: Taking a Position
Part A
The key issue from the comic strip is honesty. Anita seems to have a hard time determining what she should do. She weighs her options, stating that she doesn’t feel what her co-worker is doing is right and also that she is broke. I think Anita uses both logic and a moral value judgment thinking of the issue. I think logically she knows that what her co-worker is doing is not the right thing to be doing. Depending on how one looks at the situation, she did all three; solve a problem, make a decision, and take action. She solved the problem of her co-worker taking money from the company, she made a decision to stand up for her company and be just, and she also took action by reporting her co-worker to the human resources department. Looking at it a different way, she also made the decision not to join her co-worker and take money from the company.
Part B
There have been many times in my life that I’ve had to take a position on something. Although it’s a sensitive subject for me, the most recent issue I took a stand on was deciding to walk away and put some space between someone I was in a two year relationship with and recently engaged to. The issue was simply a difference in life goals, although immediate, I wanted to blend our families and he was not ready to settle in so quickly. This had been an issue for quite some time and I finally took a stand after he started to push away again. I immediately took a stand on the issue, which he is finding hard to understand, but I had to look at the bigger picture and what the pattern was over the last two years. I used both logic and a moral value judgment. Logically, I had to open my eyes and see that things weren’t working. Morally, I cannot put myself or my daughter through this roller coaster any longer.
