The Necklace: A critique
“Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough”, a quotation made famous by Oprah Winfrey. Certainly, with what this excerpt wants to convey, the key to achieve happiness and abundance is through contentment. Satisfaction of what is given to you by the Most High. Guy de Maupassant’s ingenious writing of his short story is a realistic portrayal of man’s tendency to become discontented and vain. Such a work is an effective eye opener for us not to be wanting, greedy or attached too much to material things. It is in this work of literature that Maupassant clinched my admiration, how he brings to life a situation in France, during his time to connect with us at present. A lot of people are likened to Mr. And Mrs. Loisel whose lives became miserable because of their own doings. Mathilde Loisel portrays a woman whose innate outward beauty was unnoticed because she was born to a family of clerks. It was no way at that time that one will be recognized if you are not born to an affluent family. Such discontentment gripped Mathilde’s being as shown in their unhappy and unsatisfied disposition in life. She suffered a lot because she can’t accept her status in life. The invitation from the minister came one day asking the couple’s presence. This brought hope and delight to the couple. For Mathilde, it is the time to flaunt her beauty. For Mr. Loisel, it is an honour to show off the charm of his wife which gives him pride as a man. And despite the meagreness of budget for this purpose, the couple agreed to buy a dress for Mathilde costing four hundred francs (more or less equivalent to a month salary of her husband at that time) and borrowed jewelries from Mme. Forestier (a friend of Mathilde) to accessorize her wardrobe. As a result, Mathilde got drunk with all the attention given to her that fateful night, being the most desirable woman that all the man present...
