Critical Thinking Application Paper
Critical thinking is defined as “the art of thinking while thinking in order to make thinking better” (Paul & Elder, 2006). In laymen’s terms it means stopping and considering the appropriate actions before reacting to, or making decisions. To think critically one must take into consideration several things. These are analyzing the situation and evaluating the thinking process, which in turn improve the thinking process.
Many people think before they act or speak. However there are those who are thinking impaired and react without stopping to consider the consequences of their speech, or actions. In some cases they figure it out quickly that what they have said or done is not appropriate and that maybe they should have thought about what needed to occur before they took action. In some cases they do not figure it out until it is made apparent to them by someone else that they should have thought about what needed to be said or done.
Use of critical thinking in retail is a daily requirement and the consequences of not thinking critically can be detrimental to ones job. When one has to help customers to find a product that they want at the price they want to pay, it can require some thinking to eliminate many other options. When trying to help a customer the sales clerk must listen to what the customer is saying, process the information and then determine the best solution. In the 25 plus years of working in retail that I have seen, these processes are often times lost on some retail personnel. By not listening to what the customer is saying, a sales person ends up giving poor customer service and potentially missing a sale and or losing a customer. Many customers will shop someplace else if they feel that the sales person is not knowledgeable or willing to help them fill their request.
