Introduction:
In Joanne Blum’s critical essay in “The Myth and The Reality in Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre” (1988), she briefly discusses the dimensions of the male/female relationships between both Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre. Blum expounds on Charlotte Bronte’s and Emily Bronte’s background of their novels along with the ideas that the bond between men and women surpass the social rankings of the outside world; Yet conflict is never-ending between the sexes in private. Blum was neither positive nor negative about her criticism. She chose to be neutral within the text.
Summary:
The novel about Wuthering Heights is a heated romance story that is ignited when Catherine’s Earnshaw’s father brings home an orphan to be a part of the family by the name of Heathcliff. At first Catherine did not like Heathcliff because she thought he was replacing Hindley. Hindley is the eldest brother of Catherine. The bond between Catherine and Heathcliff , was that of siblings rather than of lovers in life. The embers of love began to glow as they matured through life but never took to flame due to the fear of feeling incest. However, Catherine and Heathcliff find out that they both have passionate feelings towards each other that was greater than one of brother and sister ship in the afterlife where their able to explore a more affectionate relationship.
When Cathy and Hareton join in a loving relationship, the winter of Wuthering Heights becomes the spring of Thrushcross Grange. Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange are the two places where virtually all of the action takes place. Wuthering Heights were the working class as to where the Thrushcross Grange was high up on the social rankings.
Critique:
