Critical Analysis – Lee Kuan Yew (article by McCarthy)
Singapore, today, is one of the richest and well-developed countries not just in Asia but in the whole world. Even though it is just a small country, it garners much attention as it escalated to becoming a first world country. Ever wondered who established Singapore to its current state? A person to be sought after and admired, that person is Lee Kuan Yew.
Lee Kuan Yew was elected Prime Minister of Singapore in 1959 and was in the position up to the year 1990. He was considered to be the one that established Singapore to the country it is today, a “First World” Asian Tiger.
Upon reading the article by McCarthy on Lee, I can’t help but be impressed with him as a leader and as a person. Though it was pointed out how Lee is “un-Asian” because of his frank and confrontational style, this was his key to becoming the best Prime Minister Singapore has had.
The article started off with a very good attention step. He stated different ironies like how he towers over other Asian leaders though he represents a small country and how he loves Singapore but have a few Singaporean friends. It was very intriguing and truly attention grabbing that you can’t help but read more through the article.
Instead of the typical starting off with the earlier years of the subject, the author did it differently. Usually, it starts off by describing the earlier stages of a person then going to his vital life works and from there we connect why he has made such decisions, actions and motives. McCarthy wrote Lee’s achievements as a Prime Minister before his earlier stages like his educational background and such. From here, the readers first feel impressed with his achievements and later understand more how he had come to that stage in his life.
