Crime Data Comparison Paper
In today’s society, we have lots of different crimes that are reported on a daily basis. The different crimes consist of rapes, thefts, burglary and even murder. In this paper I will be discussing the crimes in two different metropolitan areas. I will be discussing the crime rates that are reported.
Detroit is the first targeted area. Detroit has been labeled to be the most dangerous city, according to the FBI crime statistics. In the city of Detroit, homicide is up by 9.2%.In the year 2011, homicide was at 76% and as of April 08, 2012 homicide is at 83%. In the past years, in 2008 homicide was at 73%, then in 2009 it peaked all the way up to 96% and in the year 2010 it dropped down to 73%. Crime is unevenly distributed throughout the city of Detroit. According to a 2007 analysis, Detroit officials noted that about 65 to 70 percent of homicides in the city were confined to a narcotics catalyst (Shelton, 2008). Many of Detroit’s problems have been put upon the increased white flight and court appointed busing in order to desegregate is schools back in the 1970s. With all that said, that was the beginning of the urban decay, an increase of unemployment and the segregation of Detroit’s inner cities. After the 1970s came and gone, the city of Detroit was largely emptied of its remaining white population by 1980. Back in 2001, Detroit had nearly 5,000 police officers citywide. Due to all the retirements, the resignations, and even the downsizing, the number of officers dropped dramatically on an average of 2,000 officers. The number of officers lost drastically dwindles leading the city to potential mayhem. The loss of so many officers is one of the leading factors to all the violence in Detroit.
