INTRODUCTION

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

How does crime and violence affect the lives of the citizens in the Gordon Pen Community? Research Questions/Aims:
1) What are the main causes of crime and violence in the inner city community of Gordon Pen? 2) How does the problem impact the lives of the residence in the community? 3) What can be done to correct this problem?

RATIONALE

I am a resident of the Gordon Pen community; hence I have seen firsthand how crime and violence adversely affects the residence of the community. This has influenced my decision to use my School Based Assessment as a means of obtaining valuable information and possible solutions to the above stated problem. In conducting this research these are a few things that are expected to be revealed: some of the main causes of crime and violence in this community and other inner city communities, the effect it has on the citizens socially and financially as well as any recommendations/ suggestions that could assist in the solving of such problems.

METHOD OF INVESTIGATION

In order to conduct this research efficiently the appropriate method of data collection need to be used. After thorough examinations of the types of instruments that can be used to collect data, the questionnaire was chosen as it is the most appropriate for this kind of research as the questionnaire enables data to be collected from a large array of persons. It is also relatively quick to collect information via the questionnaire and this is a crucial factor as this research has a deadline. The participants in this research were concerned about anonymity and hence a method facilitating that was chosen.

INSTRUMENT USED TO COLLECT DATA

This research that I am currently conducting is to find out the causes and effects crime and violence has on the residents of the Gordon Pen community. The research will also aid in the completion of my Social Studies School Based Assessment which is twenty percent (20%) of my Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate grade. Please be advised that the respondents’ identities are not revealed so they are expected to answer the questions as honestly as possible. This is not a test hence there is no right or wrong answers.
