She woke early one Saturday morning with the room a dim yellow as the sun searched for a way into her room. As her mother entered the room, she drew back the curtains, and the bright rays of sun warmed her face. The wind entered her open window on that beautiful June morning, and it tickled her nose as it reached her. “Up, up, up,” her mother exclaimed. “It’s a big day today, and you can’t stay in bed another minute! We have an appointment!” After minutes of battling her bed, she finally managed to escape the twisted covers to join her mother in the car. They drove with the windows down to embrace the bakery’s fulfilling aroma at the end of their neighborhood. As they passed she saw a line already beginning to snake through the store and out the door. What a treat that would be at the moment! As they arrived to the salon, she saw all of her friends already waiting to be helped. Nails were being done, hair being curled, and giggles filled her ears. Everyone was ecstatic for the big day, and they all had their own thing that they were looking forward to. Aerosol and nail polish trickled into her nose as the stylists began their magic on her. Time flew as the girls told stories, sang along to music, and sipped on champagne. The stylists were finishing up, and she was beginning to get anxious as they left. Everything she ate lost flavor as she thought about what was about to come. Dresses were exchanged while the girls continued to laugh and play. As her dress emerged, all sound came to a cessation. The beauty of the perfect piece was breathtaking, and as she slipped it on, the volume was turned up once more as the girls commenced to “ooo” and “ahh” at the image. Before the girls left the house, one of her best friends made a toast to a wonderful day and prayed to watch over her throughout. The melodious words that she spoke were like an angel singing. The limo arrived and they all carefully piled in. They reached their destination, and pictures began. The constant flashes of light made her feel like a celebrity being bombarded by paparazzi. After what seemed like eons, it was finally the moment she had been waiting for. They lined up, and the butterflies began to flutter inside of her stomach. She and her father went arm in arm entering the room with beautiful high ceilings and colorful flower arrangements. The world stopped when she saw him. He was beaming with his eyes locked on hers across the room, and for a moment, it was only them in the room filled with people. The love of her life was waiting just down the aisle, and she was finally ready. She was ready for a perfect life together. She was ready for two instead of one. It was her wedding day, and there was nowhere else she’d rather be.

And there it was, the most phenomenal dress anyone had ever laid eyes on. This dress was filled with so much elation, everybody stood appalled. The way the white fabric shined down to the floor was created so assiduously it resembled feathers. The gold chains ran down the back like shackles from hell. When the dress entered the ballroom, guests suddenly became capricious the way their moods started changing. Some students, including teachers and chaperones, were stunned at first glance. It was multi-colored on top to show the fun, angelic side. The finer jewelry and details of the dress were so mischievous, people didn’t know whether to love it or feel intimidated.…

Anne strolled out of the hotel carrying a plain crocheted bag she had made. The bag held a few pounds and a few silver coins. She walked down the stairs and into the jade and cream lobby and out onto the eventful streets of London, catching every little detail as she walked. Anne started to pass by a fabric shop, but then she decided she just had to stop and see the flamboyant, lively colors and the newest of fashion prints, so she strolled inside. She tried to look all around her, but only one fabric really caught her eye. It was an emerald green satin with tiny fecks of purple on it. Green had always been her favorite color, and this green matched the shade of her eyes perfectly. She did decided to examine the crisp white lace that came from factories. It looked cleaner, whiter, and more intricate then the off white, thick lace Mrs. Guard had made for Anne’s special gloves, only to be used for distinct times. She went to talk with the cashier about the prices, but before she reached the counter, she collided with a lady adorned in a frilly pink dress, and toppled over a basket of appliqués.…

I sat in the air conditioned waiting room of the hair salon. My hands fidgeted with my wavy shoulder length hair; I had grown tired of it. For the past year, I had been cutting it excruciatingly slow because that was all my mom allowed. Finally, after a month of endless begging, she had allowed me to get a trim, saying “no more than 3-4 inches, or get an A-line bob” and I agreed, at the time. But when I had walked in my hands were shaking because this was something much more.…

The stressed mother is doing her best to keep the youngest child calm and in her seat while she gets her extensions put in and her hair plastered into the style of the day. The little girl is screaming because her head hurts from her hair being yanked on and she is sick of sitting in the same spot for so long. The older sister is trying to bring the little girl back to a calm state of mind so she can finish caking her face with make-up and fix what has been smeared from the constant tears. Once the hair and make-up is finished, they bring out the outfits that resemble those of a professional belly dancer, and the little one gets dressed for the pageant. After wrestling with the little girl to get her dressed, the time-crunched mother runs through the lines and moves over and over again with her daughter, making sure she has them imprinted in her brain. The last part of the costume is put on as they are getting ready to leave, and the little girl cries as the tight dentures are forced into her mouth. The small child wipes her tears, smiles, and says “I want that crown!” as she walks out the door.…
