Creating Your School Regulations
Gilly Hicks Academy

Many Americans tend to believe that homework is something to be concerned about in a student’s education but many teachers, parents and even administrators will argue with this statement. Why even acknowledge this statement you ask? Because the main reason is that homework is becoming a growing issue and therefore it causes a student to see it as a negative way rather than thinking it would benefit them. In a student’s perspective they would say “why do homework if it isn’t graded as an assignment.” this is referring to the fact that students feel as if homework wasn’t a requirement or an obligation, parents are expecting it constantly, and lastly its overwhelming to the students. The issue mostly affects students who are falling behind, students that work, and lastly students who have family responsibilities .These actions usually occur in school, home, and it’s definitely Nationwide .When fellow educators tend to say that homework gets stressful , interferes when they have side projects in different classes, in the weekend because that’s when they have time to plan an event with their family and finally when finals are around the corner .If no one is trying to make an effort it can lead to health issues, no social life, and anxiety/stress. If we don’t try to attempt to find a solution who will? As previously stated homework is becoming a constant issue that keeps increasing within the school districts. Therefore, Gilly Hicks Academy is making an effort to prevent this issue among our students. What we the fellow administrators and educators collectively decided that we are going to be giving credit to those who wish to do the assignments (homework). Although, Gilly Hicks Academy will not penalize those who don’t want the extra help .For instance, if a student did their homework they would receive the credit and the other friend that didn’t do the homework he/she would just have a blank in the record without hurting their grade. Another proposal would be assigning homework for necessary classes. By “necessary classes” we mean math classes (algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry etc...),English, and science(chemistry ,biology ,Environment ).In order to prevent homework from becoming an issue in Gilly Hicks Academy ,we are going to be assigning homework that doesn’t take the students 3 hours to finish. As students receive these changes (policies) adults such as teachers, administrators, and parents will notice the differences from then and now meaning positive changes in grades and students. First they will be less overwhelm and no anxiety attacks basically they will come to school healthy and prepared. Secondly, instead of the students feeling pressured into doing their homework they will do it on their own since it would boost their grade by 12% if they do decide whether or not they do their homework constantly. Lastly, students will do better by doing their work without thinking it’s an obligation and help them improve and understand the material more .In conclusion, Gilly Hicks Academy will be aware if these policies are benefiting the students or bringing them farther behind and will be attempting to solve problems in the future you can be sure of that .
Grading Policy Homework is not the only debated topic that has been presented in the conversation concerning our country’s education reform. Our grading systems have also become controversial issue and may even be problematic .In the article it states “whole childhoods are sometimes sacrificed in a relentless regimen of preparing kids for Harvard a process ….I’ve come to call Preparation”. This is basically affecting the students by parents constantly putting pressure on their children, leading them to sacrifice their own childhood by juggling multiple events and overwhelming them who have constant reminder that D’s don’t count in college also damaging them by putting pressure on themselves to look better for college. Pupils are more likely to get affected in school areas such as classrooms, college councilor’s office and colleges (parents).Grading mostly becomes an issue when they get benchmarks, tests or projects and the end of the school year. You as parents, teachers administrators might not see grading as an important issue but it is because students shift their priorities loose the fun in their childhood and can lead to mental/physical health.
Nevertheless the teachers will be responsible for grading in “Standard /Letter Based Grading “.What this means is that student will not be compared with one another also by having letter based grading gives the students a goal to shoot for in the next report card .To go more into depth. Standard –Letter based grading we feel as if it could benefit our students more with this combination. The reason why we believe in this would be by combining standard (showing students in a more complex/detailed way in what they are improving on) and also what they lack of. By also using having letter based grading homework it gives the students advance in their grade and also keep an easier way to keep track of instead of using numbers such as: * 1.00-1.9(F) * 2.00-2.9(C) * 3.00-3.9(B) * 4.00-4.9(A)
This can benefit the pupils in various way during the present or future. College wise, our standard-letter based grading can help the students by looking good in applications and plus they would have extracurricular activities which helps them have a better chance in getting into college. Also, it can have a great impact during the student’s education throughout high school by giving the students more time to spend with the family and also going back to the extracurricular activities and lastly it gives them time to look more into themselves. In conclusion, this grading system will help the students be more involved have less stress and actually see where they are lacking and how they can improve in many academic ways.
Testing Policy
Across the country, many parents, teachers and students are contesting against testing because it causes stress, exercising civil rights, and increases discrimination. Testing affects students, bad test takers, junior/seniors and mainly high schools. Usually it occurs in high school, college, and of course nationwide. In Virginia there is an increase of discrimination and going more into depth Virginia “public schools ….announced targets for how many students in each racial group must pass for schools to remain good in standing… Virginia only 45% of black students in each school must pass standardize math test while 68% whites and 82% of Asians must do the same.” Meaning that it gives the minorities reason to do less because the schools are expecting less from the students but it will just get them to fall even further behind. Testing becomes an issue when students have to juggle one or more tests to prepare for, benchmarks, and more importantly finals .Many officials don’t address this issue and it should be fixed because it can bring down student’s confidence ,civil rights ,and lastly because some may argue that it is plain not fair for many reasons as I previously stated.
At Gilly Hicks Academy, the policy for testing will be where students don’t feel as pressured but they are being tested on the material. That they have been learning for the last couple of months and some information from last year to refresh their memory .For example, the students will be able to improve and understand in what they are going to be graded on. Meaning, that the students would not only be testing but help them memorize some vocabulary throughout the process/test skills. Another way is also students would not be testing on more than 1 class. What we mean by this is that the student would not be taking 3 test a day only 1 test a day (not consecutive ).Instead of 3 tests a week >> it would be 2 test a week for it cannot overwhelm the students. Lastly, there would not be benchmarks only finals because the benchmarks are the finals and therefore we as fellow educators will turn in the finals to the state for we can be evaluated on. Many parents would want to know how this will help my child. Well this will help your child by not overwhelming them, no anxiety attacks or taking some medication to sleep, and would let the student study enough for they can pass the tests. When I say “let them study enough” we are referring to them studying a good amount meaning they wouldn’t be study at 2:00 in the morning for they can pass a test. Also this would help your child by not having health issues. No more taking medication to sleep, no more freaking out because this can bite you in the butt if you don’t do well and it can affect you in college in the future. Going on with this topic “college” .this can affect the student’s college wise by having them not to overwhelm themselves and know that they do home good testing skills with them. Also they would be judge on some of their prior knowledge about testing skills and testing scores .This would cause them positive change and appear (stand out) to college admissions.
Course Offerings
Home Economics
Home Economics
In our school, Gilly Hicks Academy is going to be offering a course that not a lot of schools are offering. The course that students will be taking is Home economics .Home economics is the “art and science of home management” to elaborate is studies in nutrition, the purchase, preparation, and service of food, interior design, clothing and textiles, child development, family relationship. This class would mostly be focusing on food preparation, child development, interior design and lastly nutrition. To go more into detail by food preparation would be basically what it stands for meaning that learning how to cook the food and how to prepare the food. Next, child development refers to how the students will be learning life science in another interpretation is that students are going to be able to take care of a child and going through the processes of not marriage but a relationship as they get older. Another detail we are going to look more into would be interior designing that’s basically saying how to design houses in and out .This can also tie in with fashion designing in a way. Lastly nutrition since s home economics we wanted to incorporate a little be of nutrition since we are teacher they how to cook might as well teach them in a healthy way. This will help our students now because in general some students are going to have younger siblings’ .Eventually they are going to babysit in the future if both of their parents work and by taking this class they have an advantage because they how to care of children and know how to cook. Also with babysitting jobs can get them paid a lot more than the average paying job. In the future this can also help the students by figuring out their career. For example ,if an average student who doesn’t have a career choice can take this class and figure out that they want to be in culinary, fashion designer or even just a home dad or mom.
Another course that students will be taking in Gilly Hicks Academy is modern dance. Modern Dance is basically a style of free and expressive theatrical dancing not bound by the classical rules of ballet. The basics that we are going be covering would be technique, choreography, learning basics of ballet and jazz. In other words, what we are saying is that dance is basically technique is how to move your muscles, and which muscles to use in what way in order to make you’re dancing look the way it should. Two other details would be learning the basics of ballet and jazz meaning that in order to learn complex choreography they would have to improve on their feet and arms, but mostly shoulders. Finally, the most important detailed would be choreography and what’s dance class without actually preforming or learning different styles of dance. This can benefit our students by expanding their memory and learning how to express themselves in other way and turning into a beautiful performance. This can also help them in the future by having some college credits and who knows maybe even turn this into a career.

Homework has been around for as long as there have been tax paying schools. The first person to create homework was Robert Nevilis from Italy in 1905 (Roberto). Over the years that homework has been around, people have gotten different impressions and opinions on the topic. Most students believe it is way too much and unnecessary. Teachers believe that homework is very useful and beneficial for the students. While other faculty members believe it is a waste of time. Teachers and students are not the only ones with mixed emotions on this topic (NEA). Parents can also relate. Homework should be reduced because it can interfere with family time and cause tension, it can cause health problems and…

    Rant on Homework

Moreover, homework isn't only wasting the student's time but the teachers time as well. By marking and grading homework, teachers are wasting their time. So teachers, please don't blame us the we wasted your time. Some people assume that homework is useful for teachers to watch student's progress but I firmly believe that homework is sent home to test the parents, not the children. I think that teachers can watch the student's progress in school better because teachers don't know that at home who did the homework, the parent, the student or the internet (Google)??????? People also think that homework helps parents to understand that the school holds high goals for students. But, I consider that school work is harder than homework and that means that parents can understand that the school holds higher goals than they think. Furthermore, homework becomes terrible if no one can help you. If no one can help you then you are doing work that you don’t understand, and if you don’t understand it what’s the point having the work that you can’t even do. I really, strongly believe that more kids would stay in school and have a better learning experience if they did not have the stress of homework.…

Once again in the article “Back to School: Why Homework Is Bad for Kids” by John Buell. John informs that “Harris Cooper, a close student of the subject, reports that "The conclusions of past reviewers of homework research show extraordinary variability... Even in regard to specific areas of application such as within different subject areas, grades or student ability levels, the reviews often directly contradict one another."” This is also is important because the various studies have never proven that the increase in homework mean nothing but more work for the students.…

According to Webster’s Dictionary, homework is work or study done in preparation for a certain event or situation (2016). Parents and students throughout the years continuously complain about homework, arguing that it puts too much stress on students and not enough time to participate in extracurricular activities. Homework has been debated since the beginning of the 19th century (Shahzada 4). By the 1930s, educators were stating that homework was terrible and had no beneficial effect (Shahzada 4). When Sputnik was launched by the USSR, students needed to focus more on education which brought homework back to fame (Shahzada 5). Homework must stay in schools because it is preparation for improving test scores, establishes time management skills, and teaches responsibility.…

Finally, homework is very demanding on kids. “In most U.S schools, homework has become more demanding and time-consuming (scope magazine, pages 20-21, lines 33-35). Studies have shown that most kids feel very stressed about schoolwork and homework. There is a lot of pressure to do well in school. The first reason we shouldn’t have homework is it’s too much work. In school we sit in a classroom doing work for almost 7 hours (besides lunch). So why do we have to do homework after working for half our day and go to the place where we can get away from school. Also we have a lot of homework on days we need to study for a quiz, and an exam seems more important than homework. This is the only time we have to hangout with our friends on the weekends but sometimes can’t because we have homework. Lastly homework is terrible if no one can help you. If no one can help you then you’re doing work that you don’t understand, and if you don’t understand it what’s the point having the work you can’t do.…

“More parents are fighting back against the homework status quo in an attempt to reclaim family time” (Kalish). With the excessive amount of homework given throughout all high school grades, (9-12) most students aged from 13-18 would agree that homework has increased more than the average they have ever had their past years. Even I would agree so. “Too much homework is actually sapping our children's strength, natural curiosity, and love of learning” (Kalish). The longer the hours are spent on homework, the less time children’s and teens get to spend with their parents and the rest of their families. The less time spent with families means that bonds begin to fall apart. “Practicing dozens of homework problems incorrectly cements the wrong method into his brain” (Kalish). Teachers give out so many lessons in class; sometimes students can’t process all the information at once. If teachers slowed down the pace of their lessons, explained in depth…

With homework being the debate topic since the 1940s, research shows that with the formulation and results of the Common Core and ACT assessments American people are questioning where they stand in terms of education. The ongoing debate on education has been misinterpreted by American society and since Americans realize that they are falling behind on educational ranking, a controversy on the amount and quality of homework given to students compared to the amount of learning that are shown through testing, questions the educational standards of Americans. Compared to other nations, Americans are falling in the bottom fifth in educational rankings. This brings up the debate over homework and its effectiveness. Does practicing an assignment guarantee mastering it? How much work is too much work in the quality of assignment? What mental impact does homework pose on students psyche?…

Many parents, teachers, and students argue over whether homework is good for students or bad thing to keep and whether it should remain as an everyday assessment given to students. A CNN reporter said “The data shows that homework over this level is not only not beneficial to children’s grades or GPA, but there is really a plethora of evidence that it is detrimental to their attitude about school, their grades, their self-confidence, their social skills, and their quality of life” (Levy). Homework should not be given to tots because homework causes problems at school, at home, and in their health.…

Also, based on the article, “No More Homework?,” in paragraph 3, the author states that parents have been pushing back against homework. Sometimes my parents do not appreciate that fact that I have a lot of homework because it means I have less time for my family and activities, such as going to parties and going out. Too Much Homework

I decided to do my project on the amount of homework students receive and how it is affecting their interpersonal relationships. Most of us have siblings, relatives or kids in grade school and can relate to this issue. We can all agree that they generally receive too much homework and it is causing them a lot of stress. Homework can be both good and bad. Some homework help reinforce the material already covered in class room while others are just worksheets and drill work. The truth is that students usually receive “busy work” more often than actually helpful homework. It takes up so much of their time that they practically have no time to spend with their family. Sometimes, homework gets so hard that the parents get involved. This can create a lot of stress on families. We all know that some projects elementary and middle school students receive usually cannot be done without a considerable amount of help from their parents. According to Mr. Baker, a researcher and professor of education and sociology, “increasing homework loads is likely to aggravate tensions within the family, thereby generating more inequality and eroding the quality of overall education”. I don’t think it is worth it to have so much stress and tension in the family in the name of homework.…

These days, homework from school submerges children's lives with hours of stress and no activity. To maintain a healthy and strong body, all kids, teens, and adults need to compromise a way to get at least an hour of physical activity daily. For most people, impossibility takes place in completing this difficult task. One of the many reasons that causes America’s famous obesity epidemic is homework. This dreadful action of taking schoolwork home can and will be changed through the help of teachers and students. All learning that is accomplished should be done at school, not at home where precious time could be spent doing other physical activities or involving yourself in the world.
