On Friday night, I became well acquainted with a toilet in a friends’ apartment, after drinking too much. While over that toilet I thought about this paper, in my head I constructed an opening paragraph. I forgot it five minutes later, but I remember one part of it. “I thought to myself, “Tonight, I am Courtney Love.” “Except I like to think that after Courtney Love had thrown up everything she drank, she would then continue to drink more. That is something I could not do. I wasn’t dressed in her notable “kinder-whore” style, I was not on heroin, I don’t think I bruise as easily as her, but I feel that I was her in that bathroom. Courtney Love is a musician, mother, and celebrity. She is a train wreck, and thrives in this lifestyle. Her band, Hole began in 1989, peaked in the early nineties, and broke up in 2002. The reunion of Hole was announced in 2009, but no recording has been released. Her fame peaked when she married Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, and slowly declined after his death in 1994. Following his death, there is a strong conspiracy surrounding her as the one who murdered him. “Courtney Love and Michael Dewitt, (the male nanny who lived at the Cobain residence), were involved in a conspiracy that resulted in the murder of Kurt Cobain. (Grant)” Since then her reputation has spiraled down slowly.
Courtney Love was born Courtney Michelle Harrison on July 9, 1964, in San Francisco, California. Her parents divorced when she was five years old, and she was raised by her mother. Her mother was a successful therapist. She lived in a commune for a few years, and was sent to reform school in her teens for shoplifting. She went to boarding school in New Zealand and a Quaker School in Australia and eventually ended up in Oregon. At age 16 she traveled to Europe on a trust fund set up by her mother’s adoptive parents (biography.com). “I didn't want to sell drugs," she explains. "I didn't want to steal cars. I didn't want to be a prostitute. So I stripped."(Hirschberg). Around this time Love began corresponding with Jennifer Linch, through Linch, Love met Alex Cox, who was directing Sid and Nancy. She was cast as Nancy’s best friend and Cox wrote Straight to Hell for her, from this she put her music career on the side and decided to focus on acting, but it did not quite work out. “I had this publicist who was obsessed with Madonna and obsessed with me and she decided to make me into a star. I couldn't pull it off. I'd get zits." (Hirschberg).
Love moved back to Portland and started singing in bands, including Faith No More. She met Kat Bjelland and moved to San Francisco and started a band with Bjelland and Linch called Sugar Baby Doll. Linch and Bjelland wanted to play a punk band, which Sugar Baby Doll was not, thus Sugar Baby Doll disbanded. Then she moved to Minneapolis to play with Bjellands’ band Babes in Toyland, but was kicked out shortly after clashing with Bjelland. She moved back to Portland briefly, then to Los Angeles. In 1989 she put an advertisement in the Recycler stating she wanted to start a band, and she stripped to pay the rent. She formed Hole and began to really focus on her music. Hole was not discovered until 1991 in England. When Hole came back to America there was buzz around them, Courtney was with Kurt and “everything was falling into place”(Hirschberg)
Kurt and Courtney met at the Satyricon club in Portland, Oregon. Love developed a crush on him, but he was evasive. He knew that he liked her but he did not want a relationship. They ran into each other at another show in October of 1991 and were married in February of 1992. She was pregnant when they got married. After the marriage the Cobains went on a drug binge, with heroin and pills. Love was shooting heroin while pregnant, and it was suggested to her that she have an abortion, but after several testes it was reported that the baby was fine. The Cobains decided to get off drugs and went to separate detox hospitals in March of 1992. Their...
