Active Healthy Lifestyles Overview:
This compulsory full-credit course is designed to help you take greater ownership of your own physical fitness, to encourage you to seek out activities that interest you, and to engage in active lifestyles for the future. Students will study topics related to fitness management, mental health, substance use and abuse prevention and the social impact of sport. The focus of this content will be on health and personal planning. These topics will make up 25% of the course content. The Physical Activity Units will make up an additional 25% of the course, which will be IN-class physical activity based. Students at Portage Collegiate must attend these IN- class units with their teacher. Students will be required to develop and implement the remaining 50% of the course on their own time in a personal physical activity plan as part of the Physical Activity Practicum. Students will be introduced to safety and risk management planning to minimize the associated risks of the activities they have chosen. Students cannot begin accumulating hours toward the Physical Activity log until the Parent Declaration and Consent Form is received and all risk management strategies are in place. Students will be expected to meet with their assigned teacher throughout the semester to monitor progress toward completion.
As part of earning a credit for this course, students will be required to submit a personal fitness portfolio containing elements such as a fitness plan, physical activity log and/or journal entries, and module assignments. Students will be graded for completion of the course with a Complete or Incomplete designation upon meeting with their teacher.
