Edmond wears a few masks throughout the Count of Monte Cristo. In some parts he hides his true feelings about people and in some parts he openly confronts them. The people in the Masque of the Red Death shadow a mask over them. They fear death yet they try to hide it.

What kinds of masks do people wear? Why?
People wear all kinds of masks. They wear masks to hide their love or admirations for people. They wear masks to try to act cool and easy going because they’re insecure. Girls and some guys wear masks to get with people all the time. Most disgruntled people also wear a mask so they can get their way or feel better about themselves. What kind of masks do I wear? Why?

I wear a few masks. I hide my emotions against people in order to be polite. I hide my nervous admiration for people.

Like many others
I wear the covers,
The covers that mask our face
To take our true personality’s place.

Behind this mask lies,
Deeper feelings inside
Feelings about passion, grace, and happiness
But on the outside it is only less
Society has forced us to wear this mask
This mask of grief and blandness
Sometimes I open up my mind
And let everything fly out to express
With the feelings of no regret.

My mask has holes in it however
Sometimes I can escape
With the feeling of balance
I can freely live my life
To the extent of my pleasure

My admiration and love
Hidden behind a wall of insecurity
Every time I advance
I get pulled back by doubts and lies
It seems these days
That time goes by so fast
The mask has seemed to have welded itself in place
With no time to rebel or change
I must go along with its ways
But soon I will break free
And my old life will be a thing of the past

I can already see the skies of blue
And the clouds of white
The better days are yet to come
After I leave my mask in shambles.
For I despise this mask
This mask that society has forged to limit our minds
To limit our freedom

I will draw over my mask...
