“Fair is foul and foul is fair”, a simple quote, yet it tells the story of a strong, brave, and noble solider who gone bad due to his huger for power. “Macbeth” one of Shakespeare’s famous tragedies demonstrates the lust for power, through fate, quest for blood, and forceful woman Macbeth was a good solider, a noble solider but it all changed when he had chance to pike at his fate. The first encounter Macbeth had with the witches, he learns that he is destined to receive the kingship of Scotland. Here is the beginning of Macbeth power thirsty journey, although he was unsure of the accuracy behind the prophecy but his desire to be king is seeded. Furthermore, after the witches vanish, part of Macbeth prophecy came true. Now Macbeth is intrigued by the possibility of the remainder of the witches’ prophecy. With part of his destiny already a reality, Macbeth’s urge to receive the kingship is now even stronger than before. The real quest for blood started after the murder of King Duncan. After Macbeth acquired the kingship, he feared that Banquo’s heirs would take over the throne, thus he orders men to go after them. Macbeth’s desire to be king really shows through, he makes sure that no one will bring him down. Moreover, Macbeth order men to kill Lady Macduff and her children, after learning Macduff have fled to England to join Malcolm. Macbeth is no longer the soft and compassionate man he used to be, he has turned into a ruthless monster, and is very thirst for power. Beside kingly power, Macbeth also has a power struggle in his relationship with Lady Macbeth. Firstly, Lady Macbeth has the power over Macbeth; she is much stronger and vicious than her husband. Already lacking power in his marriage, one can understand the reason behind Macbeth’s power thirsty and his eagerness to receive the kingship. Secondly, compare to Lady Macbeth, Macbeth is much more compassionate, he is often portrayed as weak minded and vulnerable. Knowing that she is more powerful than...
