Introduction:

The general Risk Assessment under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and under Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, all work activity in which use of chemical is involved at work place should be under CHIP Regulation 2002 and confirms Regulation 2(1) ("approved supply list") and Regulation 4 of the CHIP Regulations in the category of danger i.e. from carcinogenic (category 1) or carcinogenic (category 2). All the Chemical substance must be controlled in means of use and correct measure to be taken for reducing exposure to a substance hazardous to health and in addition to that also includes the provision of systems of work and supervision, the cleaning of workplaces, premises, plant and equipment, the provision and use of engineering controls and personal protective equipment).

It is a duty of an employer to provide safe place and to minimise the risk involved in work to as low as reasonably practicable limit.

In addition to this any chemical which would be used at work place must be with current and valid MSDS and must confirm Regulation 5 of CHIP Regulation.

Summary:

The product Stainless Steel Cleaner spray has to be used for cleaning purpose of stainless steel tables used throughout the university’s laboratories.

According to the employee’s training records, states that none of the employees have had any formal training or received any information about the hazard present in cleaning activity with the given cleaning spray. And, the fact is we received the safety data sheet only two days ago.

In our investigation we found that several staff are complaining of skin irritation to their hands and a 'light head' when working with the chemical spray in some of the smaller labs. Furthermore, there was general concern that they were required to clean during work time. They were using Bunsen burners too and we know that has a flammable potential.
