Corrections Systems and Processes

Though Law Enforcement is challenged with maintaining peace and order in our society, an equally as important part of the legal system ensures public safety rarely leaving the walls of their facility. This aspect of the legal system is the correctional departments from the city and state facilities to the federal correctional institutions, all tasked with the same goal of maintaining offenders away from the general population, hence ensuring public safety, while simultaneously attempting to rehabilitate offenders via strict environment alongside rehabilitation opportunities. For the purposes of this report, two rehabilitation programs offered by the Patuxent correctional facility located in the state of Maryland, will be discussed in order to exemplify how the correctional system aims to rehabilitate its many detainees. Furthermore, this reports intent is also to compare to various programs which maybe offered at the fictitious area of Centerville correctional facilities, in order to aid the head of the correctional facility located in Centerville, in providing adequate representation of how the annual budget is used to benefit society, in hopes of avoiding funding cuts. The state of Maryland holds many correctional facilities, however the Patuxent institution, located in Jessup Maryland, which houses various inmates primarily those with various mental disorders, offers a variety of rehabilitation programs. A shining fixture, which is unlike any other rehabilitation program offered at other institutions in Maryland, is the “Graded Tier System” program. An inmate is often entered into such a program upon arrival at the institution. According to the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services website the graded tier system’s focus is best defined as “The system is based on the belief that rewarding socially desirable behavior increases the frequency of that behavior, thus reducing criminality.
