Against Corporal Punishment in the School System

Human Rights Watch and the American Civil Liberties Union cite U.S. Education Department statistics that find school personnel in the 2006-07 school year reported disciplining 223,190 students by hitting, spanking or similar means. In interviews, Alice Farmer, the report's author, found that children in Texas and Mississippi are routinely paddled for "minor infractions" such as chewing gum or violating school dress codes.What is corporal punishment? The National Association of School Nurses defines it as “the intentional infliction of physical pain as a method of changing behavior. It may include methods such as hitting, slapping, punching, kicking, pinching, shaking, use of various objects or painful body postures."I will give you three reasons why corporal punishment is not acceptable in the school system: It has no place in the education of children, psychological abuse, corporal punishment can leave bruising. To begin my speech, the first reason corporal punishment is not acceptable in the school system, because disciplinary measure is not part of any education curriculum .It indicates that educators at every level need to know that corporal punishment has no place in the classroom. Discipline can be taught and enforced with teachers. Most leading professional associations oppose corporal punishment in all its forms. The reason why is that they feel it causes emotional damage to young people.In addition there are many other non-physical forms of punishment which are also cruel and degrading and thus incompatible with the Committee on The Right Child. For example, punishment which belittles, humiliates, denigrates, scapegoats, threatens, scares or ridicules the child.
