Copper Mine Workers
Knowing Your Audience ans Communication Release

The news of a devastating accident is not easy to prepare or communicate to any one involved. Being the bearer of bad

news is never easy. The way in which the news is delivered, and what must be done before and after the news is

relayed is also important. The needs of the employees is different than the needs of the family members of those men

who were trapped in the mine. It is vital to make sure to address each of these groups in a specific way. When addressing the employees, the best method of communication for an accident such as this is a face to face

meeting. This type of devastating news is too important to be delivered in a n e-mail or memo. When human suffering

is involved the method of communication must be in keeping with the importance of the situation. A face to face

meeting is also warranted when delivering the news to the families of the men who were trapped. In the case of the

employees, the best method is to go to the location of the mine and have a face to face with all employees. In regards

( the family name) families, it would be best to provide transportation for all of the families to a location available

that can hold all the people. A face to face is the only acceptable method. The action that must be taken before meeting with each of the two groups, the families of the miners, and the

employees is similar. Before meeting with each group it is necessary to have the latest facts available on the situation.

It is also important to be able to give specific information on exactly what is currently being done to rescue the

trapped men and to be able to forecast how much time it will take to reach the men. In addition, before meeting

with each group, the person delivering the message needs to have the latest update available on the condition of the

miners and if there has been any communication with the miners. Finally, it is important to have

The Centralia Coal Mine No.5 blast was a tragic and preventable disaster that according to John Martin, “no one stopped.” With only 31 survivors a total of 111 hard working coal miners lost their lives on this dreadful day which to most of them was soon approaching. There were many factors that contributed to this tragedy and several alternatives that Driscoll Scanlan, the state inspector, could have focused on in order to help prevent this as well. Those alternatives included focusing on; the lack of efficient timing in responding to recommendations, the lack of follow through in holding some entity responsible when those recommendations did not get addressed, the lack of setting professional boundaries between the owners of the Centralia Coal Mine No.5 and government officials, and the lack of accountability on the managerial staff at the coal mine. I will also briefly address Scanlan’s motivation towards the Constitution and bureaucracy.`…

The obvious problem with Centralia No. 5 is that an explosion killed 111 people. However, prior to the actual explosion, the problem is less obvious, especially since Centralia No. 5 was similar to so many mines that did not explode. In this analysis, I will examine the possible roles and responsibilities of Driscoll O. Scanlan, the mine inspector, given the "corruption of modern administrative enterprises" prior to the accident. From this perspective, the perspective of a public official in the field, the problem is that a potential danger exists and the regulatory machinery in place to address the danger is ineffective. As an expert, Scanlan recommended that the mine be "dusted" with non-explosive, pulverized stone to diminish the possibility of the coal dust's exploding. However, his expert advice alone was not enough to motivate a response.…

The first phase of the crisis intervention plan is to inform as many people of the issue as quickly as possible. To quickly reach as many people as possible, the crisis team sent out an email to inform parents as immediately after the accident occurred. It would be best if the children are not blind-sided by the information at school on Monday morning. I expect several of the students and faculty members to go through the 5 classic stages of grief identified by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross (1969), which are: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Sometimes this can be a slow process, so I think some students and teachers will require on-going help to process this tragic loss of life. My plan involves the following crisis intervention steps:…

News of a tragedy quickly spreads through towns and cities where such events take place. Often they can spread to a larger audience to encompass a whole state or country surrounding the incident. However, every once in a while there is the one headline that grabs the attention of the entire world. This is no more evident than the San Jose mine collapse in the Atacama region of Chile back on August 5, 2010. Although many accidents and deaths happen in the mining industry each year worldwide, the United States recorded about 12,000 injuries and deaths for 2006-2007 according the United States Department of Labor (n.d.), none in recent memory had gathered so much attention as did the collapse mine in the northern parts of Chile that trapped 33 miners riveted a world.…
