Breast feeding and Pumping
People always say “breast is best”, but sometimes it isn’t.   You may have to go back to work, go to school, leave your baby at daycare or with a babysitter.   Or maybe breast feeding just does not work for you and your baby.   There is another solution if you want to breast feed but are not able to be with your baby all day, every day.   Pumping breast milk for a bottle allows you to give your baby milk while you are away for any reason.   It may not be the most efficient way, but it allows dad to share in the feeding experience and have bonding time with your baby.   Furthermore it helps eliminate some of the inconveniences that go along with strictly breast feeding.   Breast feeding and pumping breast milk for a bottle give your baby the same nutrients but there are a few differences.
Although you get enough milk with both the baby and pumping there is a difference in the efficiency of the two.   Your baby is always going to be more efficient in getting milk out of you than a pump is.   Even if you pump every time you are supposed to feed your baby it doesn’t necessarily mean you are going to get the same amount every time.   In one pump session you may only get between one and three ounces, even though a lot of babies eat about four ounces in one feeding.   Most babies that are zero to six months need on average 20 to 36 ounces a day.   Even though it is hard to tell exactly how much a baby eats when fed from the breast, they will always let you know when they are done.
Feeding your baby is great bonding time, with breast feeding only the mom gets that special time but with pumping dad gets to share in the joy.   Although the bonding time is wonderful, it is exhausting to get up in the middle of the night every time your baby needs to eat.   It is a lot easier in the middle of the night if you are breast feeding since only the mom has to get up, feed the baby, and put them back to bed while dad sleeps.   Pumping however requires more effort;...
