If you are new to content marketing, you have come to the right place! Here are some common questions you may have.

What exactly is content marketing?”
Joe Pulizzi has six useful definitions of content marketing, but here is quick version:

“Content Marketing is owning, as opposed to renting media. It’s a marketing process to attract and retain customers by consistently creating and curating content in order to change or enhance a consumer behavior.”

In short, instead of pitching your products or services, you are delivering information that makes your buyer more intelligent. The essence of thiscontent strategy is the belief that if we, as businesses, deliver consistent, ongoing valuable information to buyers, they ultimately reward us with their business and loyalty. Do I really need to learn about another form of marketing? Yes! Consumers have simply shut off the traditional world of marketing. They own a DVR to skip television advertising, often ignore magazine advertising, and now have become so adept at online “surfing” that they can take in online information without a care for banners or buttons (making them irrelevant). Smart marketers understand that traditional marketing is becoming less and less effective by the minute, and that there has to be a better way. Thought leaders and marketing experts from around the world, including the likes of Seth Godin and hundreds of the leading thinkers in marketing have concluded that content marketing isn’t just the future, it’s the present (see the video below on the history of content marketing).

As a personal definition, marketing is a strategy to promote consumer awareness and positive feelings towards a brand or product in order to encourage the consumer to purchase or use that product. In more specific terms, the American Marketing Association (2012) defines marketing as “the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.” A simpler definition of marketing, as identified by the U.S. Small Business Administration (2012), are the activities and strategies that result in making products available that satisfy customers while making profits for the companies that offer those products. The key factor that all three definitions have in common is that the overall purpose of marketing is to appeal to consumers by showing them how a product or service can meet their needs and to influence them to purchase that product or service. A successful marketing strategy can catch a consumer’s attention and make the product or service stand out in a crowd of competitors who offer similar products.…

Marketing is the process of teaching consumers why they should choose product or service over competitors. The key is finding the right method and defining the right message to use to educate and influence consumers. Companies make the mistake of thinking that marketing is just one thing, but marketing is everything that the consumer encounters when it comes to business, from advertising, to what they hear, to the customer service that they receive, to the follow-up care that provide. It’s all marketing and creating the decision within the consumer whether or not to choose initially or for repeat business.…
