Contemporary Problems
The agency I choose was Catawba County Social Services, because it focuses on many of the targets in question; however I choose the poor population. Of the 159,125 total populations in 2008 people living below poverty level was, 13.8 percent of Catawba county families, in 2007 it was 11 percent. Between 2000 and 2010 there was an increase in food assistance of 389 percent that’s from 4,956 people on food assistance to 24,252. In 2010, 10,045 food assistance receivers were 20 years old are younger. In June of 2010 231recieved work first. Work First is a federal program that provides cash and employment services for families meeting established criteria. The families received 214.36 dollars per month. 179 of the families were child only cases, that’s when a guardian are grandparents gets a check for a dependent child 52 percent of the children in the Work First case loads had a valid child support order. 36 percent of Catawba County renters are unable to afford a two bedroom apartment, an 11.50 per hour wage is needed to afford a two bedroom apartment. 38 percent of renters and 21percent of homeowners in Catawba County have housing cost that exceeds 35 percent of their income. As of December 2010 the unemployment rate was 12.3 percent. 21 percent of the work force people 25 years old or older had not completed high school. 31 percent had a high school diploma or equivalent, 22 percent attended some college 8 percent had an Associate degree, 13 percent had a Bachelors degree. In Catawba County in 2009 -10 Social services collected 13.4 million in child support for 7,800 children. The average support payment was 187.39 a month. Child enforcement collects 71.6 percent of the amount owed compared to 65.6 percent statewide. I feel that crime streams from being poor and unable to provide for themselves and /or family, and juveniles are a big factor.
