Conflict Resolution Strategies
When working with multiple members of a team you should expect to encounter multiple personalities. There are times when conflict can interfere with team production, there are also time when conflict with in a team can be productive. Teams already have a potential to have disagreements because of their diverse members. Knowing what to expect and how to react can ease the tension when conflict occurs. There are some general rules and courtesies that team members can apply that will deter teams from and prepare teams for conflict.
Conflict Resolution Strategies
When is it acceptable to voice a disagreement with a team member or coworker? How does the team overcome a disagreement or conflict to ensure its success? Each group of people must go through stages to form a team. While going through the stages there will be conflicts. Learning what to expect can help team members understand why they and their team members need to go through these stages.
All teams consistently move in an out of four predictable stages, forming, storming, norming and performing, (Paris, 2002). In the forming stage team members have little interaction as they are attempting to get to know one another. In the storming stage team members are getting to know each other. Learning about the different personalities and have little trust for one another. This stage is where the conflict begins. There is more interaction with the other members. Personalities clash, some stronger than others. Members may withdraw from the team or act out towards one or more member of the team. In the next stage, norming, team members get comfortable with their position within the team. Members get into a rhythm of working and relating with each other. In the final stage of performing all team members have worked out their problems and begin working together as a team.
