Conflict essay Outline
Purpose: Use a short story’s conflict in order to highlight our own experience! Intro: "Why does she come here at all–who wants her?”
a) This quote is from “Miss Brill” a short story by Katherine Mansfield. A woman at the park is telling her boyfriend that the old lady, Miss Brill, is alone and she always just sits and stares at people. No one ever talks to her and she never talks to anyone else either. b) The conflict is the idea of loneliness and she is always judged because she sits alone. Moving around a lot when I was younger really left me in a state of loneliness that I only got out of when I went to high school c) This happened in the summer of 2007 when I moved from California with my mom and brother

Main Ideas
My life in California! Why I moved and what my summer was like? How I truly felt? “she lifted her head and smiled.”
How I felt when I was finally in the position of being alone at a new school and not having anyone to talk to about what I was going through? I stopped being the fun loving girl that I was and now am today because no one was even interested in talking to me. “This was disappointing, for Miss Brill always looked forward to the conversation.” “And still soundlessly singing, still with that trembling smile, Miss Brill prepared to listen” How I came to realize that I needed to stop fantasizing about what my life could be like and enjoy living it because you only get one life. I got a much needed awakening from my great-grandmother. Music also became my inspiration to get out of the funky mood I was in. “She sat there for a long time.” “And what they played was warm, [Page 188] sunny, yet there was just a faint chill–a something, what was it?–not sadness–no, not sadness–a something that made you want to sing.”
