My Confirmation Essay
Emma Schultz
For my essay I have chosen to write about 3 commandments. The more I was studying these commandments, the more I truly understood them. These commandments were not chosen randomly, but are the ones I see in my daily life.
Here they are: The second commandment
Thou shall not misuse the name of the lord your God.
When I was a young child I was unintentionally introduced to foul language like cursing and swearing. Once I heard these words, I would generally repeat the words to my sister, or my parents, of course, being a good influence on me, they tried to teach me that words like that are not to be spoken. But in my current teen years, I not only hear them, but know they truly mean. I am then told that it is “cool” to say swears to other people, or just to blurt them out loud. This is not how it is supposed to be. So why do I continue to follow others in this path of sin? I believe it happens partly in anger or frustration. I sometimes get angry about things going on in my life. I get so fed up with everything and everyone that I just don’t care about the words that come out of my mouth. I knew that this is wrong to do, but I didn’t think it was a direct sin against God until confirmation class. This has changed my view on this commandment and has taught me that no matter how much I want to swear, I never should.
The fourth commandment
Honour your father and mother.
To me, this commandment is pretty straight forward. Except this commandment not only refers to my parents, but to everyone around me. This can be my family, the authorities, neighbors and everybody around the world. What this means to me is that I need to treat everyone with respect and care, and help them out in tough times. This commandment has taught me to be nice to someone instead of bullying them, give compliments not insults. And above all, be respectful, TO EVERYONE. I have seen people insult, bully, be disrespectful, sometimes just

In his essay, "The Golden Rule- One or Many, Gold or Glitter?" Jeffrey Wattles discusses the many carnations of the universal rule, "Do to others as you want others to do to you", and its influence on the way we live. This widespread advice from the Gods found in almost every religion is under scrutiny; "Is the rule golden? In other words, is it worthy to be cherished as a rule of living or even as the rule of living?"(Inquiry, p#237, paragraph 10)…

The first four commandments focus on the relationship between man and God. They command man to revere God and worship Him only. Further, the Sabbath day should be honored as the day a man focuses on their creator. On the other hand, the other six, focus on the relationship between man and another. The emphasis is that people should live harmoniously with one another, thus eliminating vices such as murder, stealing, disrespect, adultery, coveting and bearing false witnesses (Exodus 20, King James Version).…

There are three things I would never consider doing. Those three things I would never do would be killing someone else purposely, killing myself purposely, and I would never be gay. Though there are many things I would never consider doing, I think that those three topics stood out or were more of the major things. I also think that they were extremely important and crucial to include in my essay. In my mind picking these three topics tell a lot about a person and even in some cases, a bit how they were raised.…

Born in a middle-class Christian family from South India, the strict traditional values helped to embed the concept of service through family and friends who taught me trust, respect, integrity, and responsibility for my education and beliefs. One of my major spiritual values that kindled the concept of service within me is “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” which is found in the Bible. At an early age I started to practice this concept by not only self-respect for myself but mainly treating others with respect. Individuals may build their moral values from listening to their parents, grandparents, religious beliefs, friends, books, their local societal values and even watching television. Moral values and…

Do on to others, as you would want them to do to you. I think this basic principle or saying is very powerful. If everybody abided by it the world would not have as many problems as it does now. For example people wouldn’t steal because they wouldn’t want their possessions to be stolen or robbed. People wouldn’t kill each other because they wouldn’t want to be killed themselves. This is a saying my parents always drilled into my head ever since I was a few years old and it stuck with me all these years. I try to respect everybody because I like to be respected back. This is the second trait I would like others to remember me…

Example 1: A good starting point is to respect others because God said to. For example, we read in the Bible that husbands and wives are to respect their spouse and the wife must respect her husband Ephesians 5:33. Husbands, in the same way are considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect 1 Peter 3:7. The same principle applies to other relationships. Peter wrote that we should show respect to everyone. You can respect your spouse, child, parent, boss or others because of their position. Acknowledge that others have weaknesses. Everyone is imperfect. Be careful not to let their failures erode your respect for their good qualities. Look for things that you can respect. You can find something to respect in anybody if you look hard enough. Respect others as children of God. I work in a retirement community and everyday I interact with residents, families, doctors and nurse’s and my bosses the administrator and executive director and co-workers. I find that by showing respect to every person I come in contact with not only serves God’s plan for me, but my plan for my…
