NURSING INFORMATICS
DEFINITIONS:
Computer- is a machine or device use for manipulating data,process according to a list of instructions.
PARTS OF A COMPUTER:
• Monitor- displays the computer's user interface and open programs, allowing the user to interact with the computer(output)
• Keyboard-board of keys use to input data on the computer ( Input device)
• Mouse-a hand-operated electronic device that controls the coordinates of a cursor on your computer screen.( input device)
• System Unit-contains computer hardware (memory,processor,hardisk,video card.)
SOFTWARE - The term software describes the programs that run on your system. This includes your computer operating system and other computer programs which run. Software is written in a computer language (such as Basic, C, Java, or others) by programmers.
HARDWARE - The term hardware describes the physical parts of your computer which you can physically touch or see such as your monitor, case, disk drives, microprocessor and other physical parts.
KINDS OF COMPUTERS:
• MINICOMPUTERS- small computers that can process data (Pda,POS machines)
• MAINFRAME COMPUTERS- are powerful computers used mainly by large organizations for critical applications, typically bulk data processing such as census, industry and consumer statistics, enterprise resource planning, and financial transaction processing.
• SUPERCOMPUTERS- is a computer that is at the frontline of current processing capacity, particularly speed of calculation
OPERATING SYSTEM - is software, consisting of programs and data, that runs on computers, manages computer hardware resources, and provides common services for execution of various application software. (Ex. Windows XP,Windows 7, Windows Vista)
FILES - Files are a collection of data onto a permanent storage structure. They are stored on a permanent storage media such as a computer hard drive, CD ROM drive, floppy disk drive or sometimes even a tape drive
