Reflection
Information systems change all the time. From the article, it took some time, and some failures, to figure what changes best fit the situation. Today, it is no different. The only difference is that the changes happen more rapidly and are mostly electronic. The information system that was created in the late 18th century by bankers removed an impractical, and dangerous practice of walk clerks. Simplifying the process of cashing out checks, having all the banks meet at one place with the days check simplified the process. It was a clear example of how things are supposed to change in information systems. It simplified a very important aspect of life that many people do no think about. When the system came over to the United States, it was again simplified and made better. This change made the process even faster, taking only six minuets to exchange all the check for the day. One thing was present in all these processes though, paper and pen.
Now that we have moved into the Internet age, where information is created and shared instantly and every second of the day, these systems need to be just as efficient as the system that was created in New York. As we saw early and often, these changes are driven by consumer wants and needs. Systems change for consumers is multifaceted. Not only do products change for customers and what they want, but also the way companies look at information about those customers has changed drastically.
For the customer, we have seen computers go from desktops, to PCs, now cell phones have power that is greater than early PCs. It is all because the customer wants it faster, better, and cheaper. Companies have had to use information systems to create and distribute these products, and they have done an amazing job in the past decade. Companies such as Wal-Mart have been able to adapt to customer needs and survive and strive in rough economic times. They have systems in place that drive down prices on shipping, which in turn...
