Typically, hedging strategies are implemented as a means of protection. The dictionary tells us that hedging strategies involve making counterbalancing investments in order to avoid a loss. With regards to the futures market, hedging strategies involve a position in the market that is the opposite of an entity’s current position. Any gain or loss in the cash market is usually followed by a counterbalanced effect in the futures market since the two markets tend to move up and down together. The counterbalanced movement of the two markets is not necessarily identical, but it is usually enough to mitigate the risk of significant loss in the cash market. Hedging is common for farmers or livestock producers that need protection against price drops in livestock or in crops, and also for protection against price increases on purchased inputs such as fertilizer. Like the farmers seeking hedging strategies to mitigate the risks that come with rising prices of purchased goods, Thomas Foods hopes to do the same for the goods they purchase from the farmers.…

FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) had some trouble in 2006 when Microsoft submitted 235 patents that were allegedly violated by FOSS. Microsoft created these patents in order to collect royalties from companies in the “free world” (companies/people using free software). Eben Moglen of the Free Software Foundation contended that software is a mathematical algorithm and is not patentable. Moglen wrote, “It’s a tinderbox. As the commercial confrontation between free software and software-that’s-a-product becomes more fierce, patent law’s going to be the terrain on which a big piece of the war’s going to be fought.” FOSS has powerful corporate patrons and allies. So if Microsoft ever tried to sue Linux distributor Red Hat for patent infringement, for instance, OIN might sue Microsoft in retaliation, trying to enjoin distribution of Windows.…

Many studies have been performed that prove marijuana can help with the treatment of many types of cancers. Metastasis is when cancer cells spread from one part of the body to another (Mandal, n.d., What is Metastasis). Scientists at California Pacific Medical Center have found a compound in marijuana that can actually stop metastasis. This compound is called Cannabidiol. They learned this first by testing the compound on animals that had cancer and have proven that it works. They are now waiting on approval to begin human testing (Wilkey, 2012, Marijuana and Cancer). It can also be used to replace many pain pills that damage our kidneys and cause major addictions. Studies show that smoking marijuana can help lessen nerve pain or pain caused by surgery. "About 10% to 15% of patients attending a chronic pain clinic use cannabis as part of their pain control strategy"(Doheny, 2010, Marijuana Relieves Chronic Pain).…
