Compressors
Frictionless Compressor Technology
Compressors that run on frictionless bearings are an enticing prospect. Here the the compressors operate without metal-to-metal contact by levitating the compressor shaft in a magnetic field. Thus the need for an oil management system is eliminated. Such type of compressors are designed to take advantage of the magnetic bearing technology.

Magnetic bearings:
The lubricated bearings in ordinary systems is replaced by a digitally controlled magnetic bearing system, consisting of both permanent magnets and electromagnets. the compressor shaft” being the only rotating part is is levitated and held in place by magnetic bearings. Four positioning signals take the position to within 0.00005 of center.. This requires an amazing sampling rate of six million times per minute.
The advantages are:
-No friction
-energy efficiency improved by upto 2-4%
-less wear on moving parts.
-The shaft can spin at high speeds
-little vibration.

Oil-free design it eliminates the need for a lubrication system containing the oil pumps, sumps, oil separators, heaters, coolers, etc

Low noise level: less noise is produced by it.

VFD control:
There is a variable frequency drive built in so that speeds to run up to 48,000 RPM.

Frictionless Compressor Technology is

one of the fast growing Technology in

the mechanical engineering field. In the

Traditional centrifugal compressors use roller bearings and hydrodynamic bearings, both of which consume power and require oil and lubrication system. This can be overcome by the introduction of new compressor technology called frictionless compressor technology. The frictionless compressor technology is compressor with the application of magnetic bearings and permanent magnet synchronous motor.

They are used in a wide variety of applications for various reasons. For example, they are the most effective energy savers in pump and fan applications; they enhance process operations, particularly where flow control is involved. VFDs provide soft-start capabilities, which decrease electrical stresses and line voltage sags associated with full voltage motor start-ups, especially when driving high-inertia loads.…

The fan drive gear system (FDGS) is the catalyst of this new technological push, which leverages the basic laws of physics to improve propulsive efficiency. The robust, lightweight gearbox is capable of transmitting 30,000 lbs of thrust. The FDGS follows the fan shaft but separates the engine fan from the low pressure compressor and turbine. Rotating at a slower speed than the low pressure compressor and turbine, the fan allows for each engine module to operate at optimum…

History of Gas Turbines Since we are talking about turbines, there is an intimate relationship with turbo-machinery, hence the first important aspect to the history of gas turbines in the invention of the modern centrifugal pump by Appold in 1851. Then in 1902 Renault patented the centrifugal supercharger. This marks the application of turbo-machinery to engines. In 1908 Lorin proposed the forerunner of the motorjet (we will see this shortly), where air flow from behind the propeller was directed to a combustion chamber to produce jet thrust at the rear of an aircraft. Next in 1917 Morize (in France) proposes and Harris (in England) patents the motorjet. In a motorjet a conventional engine is used to drive a compressor which pumps compressed air into a combustion chamber, where fuel is added and then burnt to produce jet thrust at the rear of the aircraft. Finally, as we saw in Week 2 (History of Aviation), in 1930 Sir Frank Whittle patents the centrifugal flow turbojet. The design of Whittle is a direct evolution of the previous turbomachinery developments, and their application to aircraft. In it, he uses a Centrifugal compressor to achieve the compression ratio that Otto knew we needed inside an engine to make it more efficient. Picture a tube or cylinder that holds a snugly fitting plug. The plug is free to move back and forth within this tube, pushed by pressure from hot gases. A rod is mounted to the moving plug; it connects to a crankshaft, causing this shaft to rotate rapidly. A propeller sits at the end of this shaft, spinning within the air. Here, in outline, is the piston engine, which powered all airplanes until the advent of jet engines.…
