From the Western Thinkers first impression, the thought of doing business in any African nation is almost unheard of. Most African countries are war-torn, politically unstable, or in economic turmoil implying poor economic and business conditions. Kenya has been in political unrest for some time now, however, the nation seems to be doing well compared to their neighboring countries in the light of business. According to Kenya.go, Kenya is the economic leader of Eastern African countries and throughout this piece it will be discussed why multinationals should choose to do business in Kenya, whether it is through foreign direct investment (FDI) or simply through international trade, both of which are equally attractive.
As with many economies throughout the world, the way governments design trade is a main deciding factor in how many other factors of economic importance are determined. It should be understood how the imports, exports and commercial policies work within Kenya to begin to understand exchange rates are determined as well as different influences on tax policies, FDI and so much more.
To begin, considerations should be made upon what all imports and exports are important or existing and implications of those statistics for Kenya as well as the rest of the World. For starters, imports to Kenya are relatively high compared to other East African countries. For example, Kenya receives close to one whole percent of the World’s imports. According to the “4 Trade Indicators: Imports to Kenya”, published in 2007, one of the main goods imported to Kenya, receiving 1.46% of the World’s totals, are non-military arms. Upon examination of such a fact would raise questions including what those arms are being used for if not military, upon further investigation, it is found that crime rates in Kenyan cities—versus rural Kenyan towns and villages—against tourists...
