Rice production in the past seventeen years

Abstract

The foundation of this paper lies with the rice production in the Philippines. With that, the entirety of this paper will tackle three topics, the first of which is to identify the rice production trends in the Philippines for the past seventeen years. To identify the trends related to production, this paper will cover related factors such as type of rice produced in the country, rice yield and production per country in Southeast Asia, Philippine rice consumption and consumption relative to imports and exports against the population. Furthermore, this paper will also discuss the cause and effect of these trends. Rice production is an important player in the Philippine economy and the movement in its industry has a significant effect on the economy, whether good or bad. In this paper, the impact of rice production in the economy will be fully explored. Lastly, this paper will discuss the role of the government in the production of rice and the steps they took and are taking in response to the trends in production of rice. The discussion regarding this will span from the Grains Sector Development Program to the current programs of the PhilRice and NFA.

Introduction

Rice is an integral part of a Filipino’s life. Like other Asian countries, the staple food of the Philippines is rice. Every Filipino, at one point in their lives has eaten rice. It is said that one of the favourite past times of Filipinos is eating. Typically, a Filipino will eat six times a day—breakfast, merienda, lunch, merienda, dinner and midnight snacks before going to bed. And rice is often a part, if not the main part, of every meal. Rice is the source of half of about half of an average Filipino calorie requirements and one-third of his protein intake. In most households, the first thing a mother teaches her daughter is the procedures on how to cook rice.
