ABSTRACT

The success of intercollegiate athletics brings significant social, economic, and political benefits to institutions of higher education. Therefore, universities have been attempting to enhance their competitive capability in athletics. Despite these efforts some athletic departments do not gain such competitive advantages. Based on the Resource Based View (RBV) of competitive advantage of organizations, this research explored the dynamics of resources contributing to competitive advantages in intercollegiate athletics. The proposed model posited that the intangible resources of a university (i.e., athletic reputation, and academic resource) would influence the generation of more tangible resources (i.e., human resource, and financial resources) which in turn would influence the attainment of athletic performance goal (i.e., Sears’ Cup score) and athlete development goals (i.e., graduation rates and gender equity). The model was tested with archival data of 324 NCAA Division I member institutions in two stages where the measurement model was tested followed by the structural model. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the measurement model fit the data well (χ2/df=2.91, RMSEA=.077, GFI=.983, NFI=.984, CFI=.990). The structural model also fit the data well (χ2/df=3.20, RMSEA=.08, GFI=.947, NFI=.952, CFI=.966). The hypothesis that intangible resources contribute to the generation of tangible resources ii
