Competency Statement I
To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment

Functional Area 1: Safe
In my family child care environment I ensure that everyone is safe and I am following safety guidelines. I always make sure that there are appropriate adult to child ratio when we are either outside playing, going on a nature walk, sitting in circle time, etc. Daily I check inside and outside of the daycare to make sure that everything is safe and ready for the children to play. I have incident reports available just in case there are incidents so that the parent can know what happened and also so I can have in my records. I talk diligently about safety with the children so we are on the same page. Some of the things that I go over regarding safety are running inside, looking both ways before crossing the street, the importance of not talking to strangers and putting thing (other than food) in our mouths . In my daycare I make sure that all the infant safety guidelines are met (crib safety, outlet covers, toys at eye level, etc.).
Functional Area 2: Healthy
Staying healthy in my program is very important. Upon arrival the children (and staff) washes their hands. Hands are also washed before and after meals, after potty time, and after a sneeze or cough (if hands are coughed in). I wash my hands also after diaper change, before serving food, and after the wiping of noses. Before and after every meal the tables are sanitized to eliminate germs, the floors are mopped before the start of the day, after every meal and at the end of the day. I sit with the children as they eat to make sure they are not sharing foods (spreading germs). The children are served healthy meals daily (fruits and vegetables) the children brush their teeth after lunch before they lay down for nap. Sheets are collected and washed at the end of each daycare week.
Functional Area 3: Learning Environment
In my program I make sure to incorporate learning into everyday play. I provide numerous learning activities to ensure that the children are learning as well as having fun. Every morning we have circle time which consists of songs (ABC, days of the week, months of the year etc.). The children plays in the dramatic play area which teaches them to expand their imagination and also teaches them to learn to dress themselves (also help with being self-sufficient). I make sure to keep all learning materials at eye level so that it’s accessible to all children and they are able to choose what to play with. I provide manipulatives so children can learn counting, and be able to learn hand eye coordination. There are also community helpers in many different races so the children are learning about different cultures and different careers.

To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment I model safety practices and healthy routines in an environment that supports development and growth in these areas. My goal is to provide a clean healthy environment that meets each child’s physical needs. Making sure the classroom and playground are clean and safe at all times reduces the number of injuries of children while they are in my care. One of the ways I do this is by supervising children at all times by sight and sound even during nap times. Making sure all outlets are covered so children can’t access them. I make sure inside as well as outside there is nothing children can harm themselves on such as sharp objects or small items they can choke on. I ensure that all chemicals and cleaning supplies are put away out of the reach of children or stored in locked cabinets. I am certified in First Aid and CPR, which makes me knowledgeable of caring for accidents or injuries.…

This is done by doing my duties to the best of my ability and also by enuring the health and safety of those in my care, e.g. making sure all toys and equipment are maintained and the setting is safe. This is in line with the Health and Safety at Work Act as well as the Minimum Standards for Day Care which makes sure we follow health and safety policies and procedures. According to the Minimum Standards, we must ensure good hygiene is practiced in order to minimise the spread of infection, and when a child is ill, appropriate measures that comply with tinfection control guildelines must be taken. In order to establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment I first begin with providing a clean and organized classroom. All toys and equipment are sanitized on a daily basis, all outlets are covered and all fixtures are mounted to the walls to prevent from tipping over. Upon entering the classroom every parent is required to sign a daily health check in which the teacher and the parent both assess the health of each child. Healthy meals and snacks are provided to each and every child, keeping in mind, the allergies that each child has. Medicines are also carried for each student that requires it on a daily basis. The classroom tables are wiped down and sanitized and the floor is swept after each meal. The children also brush their teeth after meals to help the children gain healthy brushing habits. As mentioned previously, it is getting the basics right in the first place that is important.
