Competency Goal 1                            
                                To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment
Safe
My goal for preschoolers in the area of safe is for them to clearly understand the importance of rules to be followed so that they can explore any area they want and still be safe. To accomplish my goal I check to see that the toys and furnitures are free of chips and any broken parts, if anything is I immediately discard it. I keep the cleaning supplies away out of reach from the children. I maintain a list of phone numbers for contacting parents and emergency services. When we are ready to go outside I check the playground for any debris and make sure the equipments are safe to play, to ensure this I thoroughly check for any loose parts or screws on the equipment.
Healthy
My goal in the area of health for preschoolers is to provide an environment that contributes to the prevention of illness. To accomplish my goal I carry out the following steps- have the children wash their hands before entering the classroom, talk about the importance of hygiene by reading books on them or putting on a puppet show or role playing and generally letting them know the importance of washing hands after they have been to the bathroom or if they have put their hands inside their mouth or pants and also washing their hands before snack and after coming back playground thus supporting self help skills. I stay alert as to recognize signs of neglect, sickness or any kind of abuse. I have job assignments for the kids where they take turns to clean the tables everyday thus emphasizing the importance of hygiene and my colleague and I take turns cleaning the toys on a weekly basis. I encourage parents to send healthy snacks for their children thus enforcing healthy eating habits.
