Comparison of Private and Public Policing
      Post tragedy of 9/11 private policing experienced significant boom in United States. Shortage of experienced officers determined the need for private agencies which try to fill the gap between the need and supply of officers. Fear and concern about the safety of the citizens, protection of the property and more important the prevention of crime caused the growth of privatized security agencies. With most of the best officers recruited to the better paying jobs with Federal Government and with decrease of new recruits willing to “serve and protect” new economic opportunity arose for the private sector to fill in the gap.
      Responsibilities
      The usual role of the police is to work for the governmental body and enforce its rules. Their responsibilities include prevention and investigation of crimes, keeping the peace, protection of property as described in details in Code of Criminal Procedures.
Security officers usually protect private property and are employed by organizations, which than contract with companies for paid, twenty-four hour protection of the assets or people. Their main role to act as a deterrent to any criminal activity just by their sheer presence and reporting any illegal actions to the law enforcement. Depending on their patrolling area guards might be unarmed or be in the possession of pepper spray or baton and at certain locations even armed with the weapon. If job requirement call for an armed guard, person is required to posses also a valid fire arm license   along with additional training certificate proving they have a capability and knowledge necessary to stop the ongoing crime.
