With reading the following passage from Volume 1, Chapter 1 there were sections showing how demeaning men were towards woman in the eighteenth- and early nineteenth- century in England. When reading the passage the two main issues regarding the challenges, expectations and limitations of women were: dependant on men for money and a good life (i.e. marriage), and women were seen and supposed to be not heard. Throughout the book, The Pride and Prejudice, the main goal of the text was for one of the Bennett sisters to become married to the rich Mr. Bingley. The main reason why Mr. and Mrs. Bennett wanted to have one of their five girls married to one of the richest men in the country so then their family would be taken care of. Considering back into those times when your children only consist of females, when the father died then the inheritance would go to a nephew or a cousin that was a male. That was the case with the Bennett family. Therefore if one of the Bennett sister’s were to get married then not only would that sister be taken cared of if something went wrong but also the remaining of the immediate family. An example in the text that shows how important marriage to a rich man is located where Mrs. Bennett states to Mr. Bennett “ But consider your daughters. Only think what an establishment it would be for one of them…” This shows how Mrs. Bennett is reinforcing the thought of how important it is for a female to be involved/ married to a man that can and will provide for her till the day he dies. This is also an example of how woman back in the late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century in England, has challenges in the financial area because most if not all females were dependant on the income of their spouse or father. Another issue regarding women in the late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century in England was women were expected to put aside their feelings if they were told to or if the decision that was proposed to them was beneficial to them....
