ENG 125: Intro to Literature
The two stories I will do a compare and contrast is going to be on “Country Lovers” and “What it is to be a black girl.” In Country Lovers Thebedi’s social status and her lover relationship with Paulus cause her hopeful nature to be replaced with giving in to his love. The other story I will compare and contrast to Country Lovers is “The Necklace.” It shows how the girl suffered from poverty of her own dwelling, from the worn walls, the abraded chairs, the ugliness of the stuffs. I will compare and contrast on both of these girls’ lives and how they lived when they were growing up. I think that how they grew up shows how the girls will be when they grow up.
The Country Lovers , when I read it, it began with meeting Thebedi, an innocent black girl; who is playing with other children, some of whom are white and black and soon learns as the story unfolds how her social status and her relationship with Paulus grows. Despite that she wants to be with Paulus she has grown an expression of angry and she realizes that she’s in a powerless situation and settles to accept the situations in her life.
Thebedi’s good, kind hearted came from her innocence, when she was a child. When Paulus went away to school Thebedi’s gave him a bracelet she made for him. She even expressed an interesting curiosity when Paulus told his stories to Thebedi’s and she was a good listener and asked Paula questions about school.
She carried her childhood innocence into her teenage years and finds herself attracted to Paulus, a white boy, who has been one of her friends since her childhood years. They discover what love is and this leads to Thebedi to have a daughter. When Paulus found out about the baby he drowned the baby and killed her. During the investigation she was cooperating with Paulus story to protect him. Once it came to the trial; she already had a baby from...
