Traditional College vs. Online College

Traditional College Versus Online College

In this paper we will cover the pros and cons of traditional colleges vs. online

colleges, beginning with the convenience factor, examining the financial aspects and the

need for books and supplies.

To begin with, let us discuss the travel requirements. With a traditional college you

must travel to and from classes and campus; which can be more of a con than a pro.

Whereas with an online college there is no commute, which can save time and money on

travel expenses.

The pros of convenience of a traditional college versus an online college. First, there

is the fact that you have your instructor or professor right there in front of you when in

class, which can be a big plus when asking questions. With online college you do not

have this ability. You must converse with your instructor via email, which can be

frustrating if waiting on an answer to be able to finish your assignment.

Secondly in a traditional college setting you have the feedback from fellow students

that can take place in real time. On the other hand in an online college setting you do not

have this luxury. You must rely on your posts to make your point. This can be frustrating

to some people as it does not allow for spontaneous interaction.

Third with a traditional college you must travel to and from classes and campus;

which can be more of a con than a pro? Whereas with an online college there is no

commute, which can save money on travel expenses.

Fourth, in a traditional college setting one must purchase a wardrobe suitable for

school. Semi-professional dress, at the very least, which can be costly, making this a

a con for Traditional College. Online college students can attend classes in their pajamas,

making this a pro for online college.

Fifth, in a traditional college setting one must travel to and from the campus and factor

in time for classes in a very structured setting and schedule. On the other hand with an

online college the schedule is very relaxed except for due dates. So, you can schedule

time to do your schoolwork when it is the most convenient for you, not on a set schedule.

Next, we will look at financial aid. I could not find any major significant differences

in preparing the FAFSA for a traditional college versus an online college. You must go to

the government website and fill out the forms no matter which school you decide to

attend.

The financial aid advisor in a traditional college setting will ask you to meet them in

their office to go over the FAFSA and any other paperwork needed to process your

student loans or grants you are applying for. That means that you will have to schedule a

time to meet with them during office hours. However, in an online college setting you

will have the convenience of speaking to your financial aid advisor over the telephone,

practically any time that is convenient for you.

Traditional College Versus Online College

Lastly, we will look at supplies and materials needed for class. In a traditional college

setting there are a lot of school supplies you will need. Things like paper, pens, binders,

notebooks, etc. You may still use some of these things in an online college however, they

are not required.

Books are another expense when it comes to traditional college...
