In the story of an hour Mrs. Mallard is the main character who has a heart condition. The story begins with learning the news her husband has died in a railroad disaster. Mrs. Mallard’s sister, Josephine, is the one who tries to break the news gently due to Mrs. Mallard having a heart condition. Mrs. Mallard begins to cry and goes to her room and locks herself when while she has a few moments to herself. While in her room she begins to whisper the words free. Josephine foes to Mrs. Mallards room and begs her to open the door and she does and than the two approach the steps and go down as they come to the bottom of the steps the door flings open and it is Mr. Mallard standing there alive and well and Richard, Mr. Mallards friend tries to block his view from Mrs. Mallard but it was too late she had seen him and she knew her freedom she thought she was going to finally have was gone. In reading the story it leads a reader to believe the shock of seeing her husband alive after being told he was dead that the shock was too much for her heart. The doctors diagnosed that Mrs. Mallard collapsed from “joy that kills”. Mrs. Mallard had felt free after learning her husband was dead and realized the trapped feeling she had being feeling in her marriage. The story of an hour indicates the last hour of Mrs. Mallard’s life. The story of an hour was about the freedom that Mrs. Mallard had experienced briefly thinking her husband was dead and the controlling marriage was over only to see him walk in the door well and alive and the joyous feeling of being free was gone.
