Compare and Contrast
Edmond Dantes and Joseph from the Bible are similar because they both were betrayed. People that Dantes and Joseph thought they could trust were the same people who falsely accused them. They both got everything taken away from them and were both sent to prison. “Dantes was now thirty-three years old, as we have said, and his fourteen years in prison had brought what might be described as a great spiritual change to his features”(Dumas 9). He was an innocent prisoner like Joseph, and got everything taken from him. Pharos daughter falsely accused Joseph, and took apart the trust Potiphar’s had given him. Potiphar’s daughter was upset “So it was, when his master heard the words which his wife spoke to him, saying, “Your servant did to me after this manner,” that his anger was aroused. Then Joseph’s master took him and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were confined. And he was there in the prison”(Genesis 39:19-20). Potiphar had to believe his wife, and therefore sent Joseph to prison for mocking his wife.
Although they were both put in prison they are both different because Joseph was able to stay the same person and Dantes was not. Dantes wanted nothing but vengeance, and Joseph had faith, which put him in a higher position, then he had been before. Dantes had changed because when “Edmond smiled when he saw himself. It would have been impossible for his best friend—if he had any friends left—to recognize him; he didn't recognize himself”(Dumas 11). He was unrecognizable not only to his friends but also to himself. Joseph was able to see past what was happening to him and choose to focus on God. “But the Lord was with Joseph, and showed him mercy, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison”(Genesis 39:21). He kept faith in God and was able to forgive Potiphar, and his wife by God.
