CHAPTER I
Introduction
The word pharmacy is derived from the word pharma which was a term used since the 15th -17th centuries. This was derived from the Greek word meaning 'drug” or “medicines”. The pharma offered general medical advice and a range of services that are now performed solely by other specialist practitioners.

The earliest drugstore is date to the middle Ages. The first known drugstore was opened by Arabian pharmacists in Baghdad in 1754, and many more soon began operating throughout the medieval Islamic world and eventually medieval Europe. By the 19th century, many of the drugstores in Europe and North America had eventually developed into larger pharmaceutical companies.

Pharmacy is the health profession that links the health sciences with the chemical sciences and it is charged with ensuring the safe and effective use of pharmaceutical drugs.
The scope of pharmacy practice includes more traditional roles such as compounding and dispensing medications, and it also includes more modern services related to health care including clinical services, reviewing medications for safety and efficacy, and providing drug information. Pharmacists therefore, are the experts on drug therapy and are the primary health professionals who optimize medication use to provide patients with positive health outcomes.

Along with providing individual of needs for medications, pharmaceutical companies arise. There are number of companies selling pharmaceutical products that one can choose from. In this study, Mercury Drugstores and Rose Pharmacy are the subject of the study. Both companies operated nationally and give its clients a commitment of serving whose trust and patronage has allowed continuing its corporate existence. This study is being conducted to determine and evaluate each practices in terms of selecting, inducting and training it employees, emotional behavior and human relations of its employees, consumer behavior, advertising and ethics and etiquette practices. And also to draw conclusions and recommendations to better serve their purpose of giving its customers more access to quality, safe and life-saving medicines with continuous trust and loyal patronage.

Company Profile
Background
Mercury Drugstore
From its humble beginnings, Mercury Drug has gone beyond expectations. It all began in February 1945 just shortly after the liberation of Manila from Japanese Occupation. Mercury Drug is a chain of drugstore operated and solely owned by Mr. Mariano Que. Mariano Que realizing the need for medicines, started a very humble business venture with his hard earned P100. He bought a bottle of “Sulfathiazole” (wonder drug that cures all during that time.) and street peddled in the sidewalk of Bambang, Sta. Cruz,Manila. From pushcart selling and with his previous working experience in a drugstore before the war, he eventually opened a drugstore on Feb.1, 1945.

He named “Mercury” in Roman mythology the messenger of gods, the god of commerce and manual skill. Mercury’s winged feet symbolize speed and the caduceus he carries the medical profession....
