Como Agua Para Chocolate- Resumen
Capitulo I.- Enero.

Coming together to live under same roof was not a problem because it made them grow even more communal. The men stayed in the capital during the week and came back home on Friday afternoons. The wives, cousins, aunts, grandmother and nursemaids stayed in the house all week. It was a very beautiful atmosphere, they had so much fun, and it seemed then that they were not living in the dictatorship but in a fairyland.…

Rodriguez paints for the readers a dreary present, one in which there is a great divide and disconnect that exists between each member of his family, colored by a sense of guilt, shown through selection of detail, narrative structure, and punctuation. The divide between the parents and their children becomes most apparent when the children rush to leave in their “expensive foreign cars”, the sister in her…

In order to fulfill her responsibilities toward her mother, Tita must obey her—a difficult task, given Mama Elena's authoritative nature. Mama Elena makes harsh demands on Tita throughout her life and expects her to obey without question. Mama Elena feels that Tita has never had the "proper deference" towards her mother, and so she is particularly harsh on her youngest daughter. Even when Tita sews "perfect creation" for the wedding, Mama Elena makes her rip out the seam and do it over because she did not baste it first, as Mama instructed. After Mama Elena decides that Pedro will marry Rosaura, she insists that Tita cook the wedding feast, knowing how difficult that task will be for her. When Nacha dies, Mama Elena decides Tita must take full responsibility for the meals on the ranch, which leaves Tita little time for anything else. Tita's struggle to determine what is the proper degree of obedience due to her mother is a major conflict in the novel.…

First of all to look at how Manuela's character changes throughout different parts of the film. In the melodrama, the focus of the film is a family, which contains many archetypes for the characters to fall into. In the exposition we see her as the devoted mother to Esteban, she cares for him in every way possible, we she her making his food, tucking him in bed at night, worrying about him as he crosses the road alone. However these are all traits that should be acted out on a younger child, indicating straight away Manuela's need to “over mother” at times, and also her need to mother when it is not actually appropriate or necessary. There is a sense of irony with the film, as we see Manuela acting as the grieving woman on screen, even before the tragedy of Esteban's death. Manuela leaves for Barcelona and assumes the role of the surrogate mother for Sister Rosa, even though she has no real ties or connection to the girl, “over mothering” yet again. However Rosa also falls under tragedy and Manuela becomes the grieving mother once again. Manuela shortly becomes devoted mother for the final time to Rosa's baby, who she names Esteban also. We see Manuela changed between these two character types throughout the entirety of the film, she goes from devoted mother to grieving mother until her “over mothering” attitude becomes useful on an actual child, where we are left to assume everything is fine.…

After Pedro and Rosaura’s marriage, Tita is acknowledged for her first anniversary as the ranch cook. To congratulate Tita, Pedro hands a bouquet of roses to her. Tita, making her way to the kitchen, holds Pedro’s roses so tightly that “the roses, which had been mostly pink, had turned quite red from the blood that was flowing from Tita’s hands and breasts” (48). Pedro’s roses for Tita show the romantic relationship he wants to have with her, however, his love has harmful consequences shown through the blood coming from Tita’s chest. Blood indicates pain or hurt to the affected person. Likewise, Tita’s blood from the roses represent the pain and damage of her heart, resulting from Pedro’s love for her. Instead of throwing the blood petals away, Tita uses them to make a quail dish for the family gathering. When Tita finished eating her dish, her reaction was startling, for “Tita wasn’t there, even though her body was sitting up quite properly in her chair; there wasn’t the slightest sign of life in her eyes” (52). Tita’s lifelessness is one detrimental effect of Pedro’s love for her. She ate the quail, containing the bloody red rose petals representing Pedro’s painful love. When she consumed his love and the pain, it left her lifeless and dead. Pedro’s love in the end had only destroyed Tita. Pedro’s bouquet of roses that bled Tita and sucked the life out of…
