Community Windshield Survey
The community I have chosen for this paper is The South ward of Newark, New Jersey where the hospital which I work is located. Newark is an urban community consists of primarily of African American and Hispanic population. The South Ward of Newark and contains 17 public schools, five daycare centers, three branch libraries, one police precinct, and three fire houses (City of Newark New Jersey, 2013). The city’s property and violet crime levels tend to be higher than New Jersey’s average level (Newark, NJ Profile, 2013). Observation of this community through a window shield survey gave me the impression there were several social and health concerns.
The Community vitality of Newark is evident by the fact that there are many people out on sidewalks, outside stores and in the park and were predominately African American men in groups. In contrast, I did not see many women or children and the community did not seem to be family oriented. The people, in general, were unkempt and looked thin and undernourished. During my surveys, I witnessed several groups drinking outside a bar on the sidewalk. A high amount of police presence the area during my surveys may indicate potential criminal activity.
Indicators of social, economic, and cultural conditions include many churches in this area where many residents participate on a weekly basis. A basketball court was seen on during my survey in which young male adults were engaging in a game and other young men watching. The homes are built close together and they were not maintained well and were in need of repair. In addition, there were two schools in the area without playgrounds and the children were not visible during the daytime. I also noticed numerous bus stops that were covered with benches provided which seem to be the main means of

Is this a “thriving” community or does it look “run down?” Is there new or ongoing construction? Are buildings, roadways, and public areas clean and well-kept. Do you see dirt, trash, or graffiti? Sunnyside is an old neighborhood established in 1912 , although it has some “run down “ homes there are new construction and new building and development. There is an indicator of growth in this poor neighborhood. Roadways and public areas are clean and well kept.…

Community is commonly defined by geographic location but encompasses much more. Location is a defining element, but a community also includes “a group of people with diverse characteristics who are linked by social ties, share common perspectives, and engage in joint action in that location or setting”, (MacQueen and McLellan and Metzger, 2001). The community of Parkhill is a neighborhood in the city of North Little Rock, a suburb of Little Rock, in central Arkansas. We measure how well the population adapts to its physical and social environment as well as how well the population supports one another…

The Great Seattle Windshield Epidemic reflects the collective delusion that can exist in society. In reality, approximately 4,000 cars had their windshields pitted. The media influenced everyone to believe that it was an issue, by drawing their attention towards it. Pitting of windshields is common, therefore should be expected. The questions arises as to how one can know, without looking. By drawing attention to the already pitted windshields, people witnessed damages they’ve never seen before. Seattle citizens misconstrued the new found information with an existing problem that they were facing. Considering how many people had their windows pitted, you begin to notice how blown out of proposition this is. The media quantified the situation…

The research conducted in this paper was to prove a point on whether or not the neighborhood you live in makes up for the chances you have in life. I am comparing two parts of Chicago, Garfield Ridge and Englewood. Both have a major diversity within people and I will be talking about the statistics of both neighborhoods and providing proof and evidence on which community provides the most for the upcoming generation. I chose the opposing neighborhood to show that Chicago can be segregated and segregation in Chicago causes kids to lack the knowledge and education they need in order to “survive” if you must say.…
