Community Profiling
E-Tivity 2: Community of Inquiry

Introduction
The area we choose for Community Profiling was the town of Portlaoise, Co Laois.

Rationale
The rationale for this area was to pick an area that would be useful to one of the three of us rather than an area that would not be beneficial to any of us. The consensus then was the Portlaoise town as the Community Nurse covers that area and is reasonably new in her position.
It also allowed the Community Nurse to become more aware of what was available locally as there were areas of profiling that she was unaware of. Being able to locate different resources proved very helpful to her already due to not knowing about certain profiles. She also suggested that she share it with the two Settlement Workers at Midlands Simon Community who cover Laois and Offaly. So not only are we all learning about Community Profiling, it is also being put into use by those in their every day employment.
We choose the six areas of Health, Education, Housing, Essential Services, Employment and Voluntary Groups as these are the main areas that the Community Nurse would liaise with and on behalf of her client due to the nursing care being holistic in nature.

Portlaoise Area
Portlaoise historically also known as Maryborough from 1557 until 1929, is the county town (capital/administrative centre) of Co Laois in the Midlands region of Ireland.
The population in 2011 was 20,145.

The focus of the community as a client occurs when nurses are in the forefront of direct care in the private homes of patients, not limiting to only hospital-based care. Nurses collaborate to improve patient health by focusing care on a specific community population. Direct care is given to patients who share common illness prevalent to their specific community. Partnerships are shared to improve the overall quality of health within the community and are determined through assessing common problems and behaviors (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012).…

Community health nursing is a vocation; striving to improve the health of the community by promoting, stabilizing and protecting the health of individuals, families and identified aggregates. We are able to have the furthest reach when we can isolate a specific deficit of an aggregate through assessment and subsequently the development of a community support program. Community support programs promote health, access to services and self-advocacy.…

The community is the client if a nurse is helping individuals even one at a time in the community. Stanhope and Lancaster (2008) states: “The community is the client only when the nursing focus is on the collective or common good of the population instead of on individual health” (pg. 344) and “Although the nurse may work with individuals, families or other interacting groups, aggregates, or institutions, or within a population, the resulting changes are intended to affect the whole community” (Stanhope and Lancaster, 2008, pg. 344).…

The community is the client only when the nursing emphasis is on the common good of the population instead of on an individual’s health. When focusing on the community as client, direct clinical care can be a part of population focused community health practice. This type of care decreases the risk of an epidemic in the community. The community client also highlights the complexity of the change process.…
