1. Introduction
This paper will look into the field of Communities of Practice (Cop’s) and seek to determine what they are, their composition, functionality and importantly how they assist with employee development in an organisational context.
Since the dawn of mankind human beings have lived and operated in small groups so as to pool resources and to increase their ability to survive (Smith, B 2004), and as populations and civilisations grew in number the importance of group formation to provide resources and safety grew with it.
However it is only recently that the benefits of these communities have only just begun to be realised and research in this field has grown rapidly since the first early theories in the 1990’s.
