Communication: What does it take to communicate?
Since time began communication has been vital for survival. Today, times have not changed, communication is still vital to survive in this time. So, we ask ourselves, what does it take to communicate? There are several aspects of communication in which we use to communicate with each other, but we will only examine just a few to determine what it takes to communicate; identify the barriers to effective intercultural/interpersonal interactions, develop strategies for critical and empathic listening, and recognize how words have the power to create and affect attitudes, behavior, and perception, and we will be discussing active listening. Because before we can communicate, we have to be a good listener. With these few list of tools, we can start communicating with each other.
In identifying the barriers to effective intercultural/interpersonal interactions, we find one is ethnocentrism. Hybels & Weaver II (2007) indicates, “This is the belief that our own cultural group is superior to another cultural group” (pg. 66). Case in point, we think of our culture as technically superior to say the people of the Amazon culture. We also think our culture is morally superior to the Afghanistan culture. These presumptions are subjective to what culture a person comes from and in most cases are technically incorrect. You must walk a mile in another person shoes to discover etc… I do not know the rest but this analogy is correct. Until a person lives in the culture you may believe is not up to your standards, one culture is as good as the next in the way you deal with the culture’s actions, thinking, normality, etc… Dong, Day, & Collaco indicate, “It is crucial for individuals to develop intercultural communication competence today, due to the fact that almost all of us are dealing with intercultural situations every day and everywhere” (Dong, Day, & Collaco, 2008, p. 30).
