Communication Theory Paper
Communication theory can be defined as the theory of the communication of information from point A to point B. Communication is studied by scholars, and is broken up into semiotics, media effects, and message production. The aspects of communications that have the greatest affect in everyday life are interpersonal (how an individual processes information), intrapersonal (the interactions and influence that two individuals have on each other), and group (how dynamics happen among individuals)(Elsevier, 2006). In this document the subject to discuss is a typical day in Cardio-vascular surgery. Also, how good communication is beneficial and how a breakdown in communication can cause complications that can be fixed.
Our first surgery patient of the day for surgery was an a.m. admission. This means that coordinators from the hospital had contacted the patient in compliance with the physician’s orders to have surgery on a certain date at a certain time. The patient arrives on time. The pre-operative holding team begins getting the patient ready for surgery. The surgical team is preparing the operating room for the patient and the surgery case scheduled. The surgery team consists of nurses, a perfusionist, a perfusion technician, a nurse anesthetist, an anesthesiologist, a physician assistant, and a surgeon. Communication, among the members of this team, is critical. The nurses coordinate among one another who will be the scrub nurses and who will circulate. The scrub nurses will open sterile supplies and do other duties involved in getting the operating room ready for surgical case. The circulating nurse will assist scrub nurses through counting of surgical instruments, and then leave the room to go to the pre-operation holding area to meet patient and family.
