Back in 1862, a British widowed governess ‘Anna Leonowens’ traveled with her young son ‘Louis’ to Siam (today’s Thailand), to educate the King’s Eldest son. When she arrived, she found out that she has to teach his other 58 children, and his numerous wives. Anna found herself in a culture that is so different from her own, and she faced several challenges throughout her journey to adapt to this new environment.
Students’ Task is to watch the movie and answer these questions based on their opinion and what they learned from chapter two (Culture and Communication): 1-Based on Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions, discuss the cultural differences between Anna’s culture (British culture), and the king of Siam’s culture (Thai culture). Justify your answer by emphasizing the scenes that support your argument in the movie. (2 Marks)
2-Explain the factors that hindered Anna’s acceptance of the Siamese’s culture? And after a period of time how did Anna and the King of Siam develop a positive relationship? (2 Marks)
