Misunderstanding #1
Who was the sender? Manager
Who was the receiver? Myself
What was the message? “Can you please stop distracting others around you and perform your tasks with more efficiency.” What channel was used to send the message? Email
What was the misunderstanding that occurred? A new member of our team was working on a project and needed some assistance on the proper tools to utilize in the completion of project. She sat right behind me so she turned around and started asking me questions on the steps I would recommend to complete the project. I started giving feedback regarding steps I has previously taken and had much success with. Approximately five minutes after the initial engagement took place I received an email from my manager stating I needed to stop distracting others and do my job. I was not happy when I received the email. My manager did not know I was going out of my way to help a fellow team member out. How could the misunderstanding have been avoided? If my manager would have walked to our area and heard our discussion he would have known I was not off task and distracting others. What did you learn about the communication process from this activity? We need to practice more critical thinking in the workplace rather than assuming the worst, initially. What seemed to be the main causes of the misunderstandings? I do not believe my manager was practicing critical thinking, in which led him to assume the worst, right out of the gate.
